Going to buy a D200

D200 I think is perfect when paired with a 18-200VR, but of course excellent with a 17-55 F2.8. I absolutely feel that a Nikkor will outperform and out-shoot any TAMRON, TOKINA or SIGMA lens. It ended costing me more $$$ to sell away these 3rd party lenses n buy Nikkor lenses. Just my 2 cents.

Pretty cheap these days... getting 2 x 4 GB should be a good idea ;)
If you got the mullah for a D200....there should be no problem with this new investment of CF Cards.
I just ordered my 8GB 2**X CF already :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

get the d200 or d80 (2k+) and the first lens must be a nikon 50mm f1.8. With the remainder, get the nikon 70-300VR.

dont forget you need spare cash to spend on accessories like mem cards (e.g. 2x2GB), flash (e.g. SB-400), tripod, bag, blower, cleaning kit, filters etc..

Thank you guys for all the openions... Now even more confused :bsmilie:

Another brother suggested that I get a D80 instead and spend the rest on good glass

D80
17-50 2.8
70-300 VR
90 2.8 Macro (optional)
SB 600

What do you think of this set ?

Regards,
Faisal.

I would rather go for a better flash, get hte SB800 is more power then SB600. ;)

sorry to post on your thread, but since there are probably quite a lot of D200 owners visiting this, i want to ask some questions regarding the in-camera settings, particularly, the "Optimize Image" settings, where we can control the sharpness, contrast, color mode (I or III), etc...

What settings do you guys use/recommend. I've been playing with it, i.e, setting sharpness to +2, looks good for still shots, but on fast moving contrasty subjects (bright red versus background), is it the reason for having the object to have seemingly jagged lines?

Were you using a VR lens? If so, the VR might be the one that's causing the jagged lines. I'm using +2 on the sharpness too, no such issues with the normal lenses. ;)

anyway, what are your other settings?

In my personal opinion,
D200+18-200VR - not a good choice

D80 +17-55 or 70-200 - value for money

D200+17-55 or 70-200 - best combination among the three, IF money is not a concern

Get a few MF primes, say Nikkor 35mm F/2, or the Carl Zeiss Jena 20mm F2.8s. That should help you solve your budget crunch.

Good or not...depends on the situation

I'm using the 18-200VR with my D50 and with my D200 now. It's a very good All-Rounder and WalkAround lens but should it be compared to other F2.8 lenses of course it will lose out at some aspects but win at others
During a Street Shoot, when compared with a 17-55 or 70-200 combo, the 18-200 wins hand own of who ever gets the shot first, if the combo required a lens change...but the outcome of the photo is another story.

Wait for D300

agreed with the bros here.

spend less on either d80 or a 2nd hand cam.

spend more money on good lens which will last u all the next few camera upgrades....

i suggest d80, and blow on the 17-55 if possible.... use the d80 until die, then u can keep the 17-55 and go for the next new model...

my 70-200 and 17-55 have lasted 3 generations of camera...

lens or body more important

i think it needs to be a balance?

After collecting a significant amount of lenses...its time for a body upgrade. ;p

Lens! No doubt

Body is always consumables. Today's DSLR techologies is still developing in a very fast way. Manufacturers update their body models every one or two years. You will never hold a best DSLR body for long because it will surely be overriden by next new model released.

Buy a reasonable body and spend the rest of your budget on a good lens. You may not even necessary to buy a flash a first place. In most of the body there is build in flash, it can give you some reasonablly good photos at night.

Another advice is don't rush to cover the whole range from 18 to 200mm. The fun part for a DSLR is changing lens. Don't destroy it too early by buying a 18-200mm lens. ;)

Hey guys.. I'm also upgrading to D200 soon but just wondering will the price drop after next week IT show?
