Going Back to Film

I've been a digital user right from the beginning, but over the last few months, I've accidentally wandered into shooting film. My original intention was to start disciplining myself to shoot with only one prime lens in order to force me to compose better, and also above all to lighten my camera gear. I hate carrying around all that heavy camera gear.
I then discovered rangefinders and since there isn't a full-frame rangefinder yet, I started using film. It was then that I discovered the amazing dynamic range of film compared to digital. It's a world of difference.
That being said, scans from consumer flatbeds cannot match the crispness of digital. I'll probably use both from now on. Digital mainly for colour, and film for black and white. But definitely once there is a full-frame rangefinder, I'm not going back to SLRs.

I need to save $10000 for a Leica!
Not true, you can start out with a Leica CL and a 40mm lens for slightly over $1,000. The M6 which I am now eyeing is also going for less than $2,000 for the body, so if you top up another 700+ for a lens, that's still way below $10,000.

I got a set up back yesterday, and did a try on a roll of lucky film which I shot long time ago, I just wanted to get a feel of it without much anticipation of a good result.
You know what, to my greatest surprise, I did NOT screw it up. It's actually pretty successful!
Most of the photos are well developed, only a few are not developed well, with some strains, i am not sure if it's because I did not shake enough, so that the chemicals were not spreaded evenly among the negatives, or was it due to other mishandling?
Nevertheless, I feel damn cool now, and I can't wait to develop my half-finished tri-x tomorrow.

Haha! Ever since I started using RF, SLRs were all back in the Dry cabinet collecting dust:bsmilie:
These kinda cameras, the digital generation just cant appreciate it.. Their view is always "wa lau, expensive film, still have to wait for process+scanning etc etc" "camera so old......"
I guess they forgot to remind themselves that the DSLRs depreciate the day you walk outta the shop brand new:bsmilie: Whereas film cameras, of course not all, are really holding up on their values

Vinyl records are still around... There are still people releasing their work on vinyl records.Cost, timeline and convenience. I think digital is here to stay. Remember how the compact disc outlasted the vinyl record?

I started off self-learnt digital. I like the instant review and able to correct on the spot, and I like to use Av a lot and sometimes Manual. Using Manual with metering makes life easy. I played Seagull once, it forced me to bring out all technique from my memory. It was a fully manual camera and no battery. Using such camera does test on your experience and technique. It is good to back to film once in a while for back to basic.

Film is a totally different medium from Digital.The more you shoot you shoot film, the more you try to get everything right in-camera.
