GF1 or LX3

Wah you're one of the few who can tell my avatar is a snoopy. :vhappy: Some people thought it is a table lamp.

Using the LX3 can still achieve shallow DOF, but it will be harder due to it's shorter zoom range (24-60mm). If you don't mind the weight & size of the 1000D I would say this will be a better option over the LX3.

Personally I would prefer the GF1. But then I already have a DSLR and a compact. ;)

I just bought a LX3 and am loving the hold, feel, shots... Woohoo! =D

:p let me know where u got the best deal okie
will source around too for the best package/price

he hee it's quite obvious it's snoopy...for those who doesn't see it prob are from a different generation ? :p

btw.. wat's DOF? so meaning i've to stand very close to the person to have that blurry effect huh?
well i dun mind the size just that the only bad part is ... difficult to bring it overseas as too much things and so heavy...
GF1 would be the best choice if only it's much cheaper... or someone just give a pink set to me... i dun mind investing in a better lens he hee
Maybe i can just focus on LX3 or affordable cam then aim to get GF1 nx yr?

DOF is "depth of field", which is the region around the camera's focal point that is considered 'in focus' or 'sharp', and anything outside that region is considered as 'out of focus'. So let's say you bought the LX3 and is using it to shoot your boy friend at 3m away, with focal length of 60mm and aperture of f/2.8. The DOF in this case is 2.96m-3.04m from the camera. This means that anything within 2.96-3.04m is considered in focus, and anything outside (either nearer or farther) is out of focus. This is in fact how to create the 'subject clear and background blur' effect that you are looking for. :)

Below are two pics I took to show you the effect of using different aperture size (f/2.8 is wide and f/11 is narrow aperture):

Yea I kinda agree that GF1 is rather expensive. For now you can either go with LX3 first and get GF1 later, or you can consider getting a 2nd hand GF1. Or you can hint to your the other half that you want a pink GF1, and see whether it works... :bsmilie:

hmmmm getting clearer now .. but still confused....
so .. does it means the person have to stand within 3 M to get a clear face and blur back? as long as i set my AP settings? the lower the F is better? :p
so F2.8 is just how far away?
:p i guess it's difficult to find a 2nd hand pink GF1.... why not i just pray to win lottery is easier than anyone buying for me :p

If you're referring to the above example, then yes the person can stand anywhere between 2.96m-3.04m and he will be in focus. Any other people/objects within that distance will also be in focus as well. But that's just for this example. It doesn't mean that your subject will always need to be at 3m away.

Normally when shooting you would begin with framing & composing your shot. For example, if I want a 'head-and-shoulder' shot, I would either zoom or get closer to my subject (or both) until I see a 'head-and-shoulder' in the viewfinder/lcd screen. If I want to reduce the DOF, I would choose a long focal length (say 200mm), choose a proper location to frame my shot properly, and select a wide aperture value (e.g. f/2.8). From here if we want to know the DOF, we can then check the distance scale on the lens, and uses these values for the DOF calculation.

hmmmm getting to chem for me to digest now .... :p
Thanks anyway...i'm glad to know LX3 can give me that effect... another issue is to make the photos yellowish tone which i think is easily achieved with the white balance thingi huh

btw... i found out the name of effect i want... Bokhen or something like that...

Actually it's not that hard. :) Just need to remember 3 important things:

- Wider aperture (small aperture value) => shallow DOF.
- longer focal length => shallower DOF.
- nearer camera to subject distance => shallow DOF.

And you want shallow DOF to achieve 'subject clear and background blur'. :)

Erm... bokeh is the 'quality' of the 'blurness' caused by shallow DOF. :)

just curious.. is the pink GF1 available in singapore?? i onli see the red, silver and black one around ...

:) thank you ~!~
shall get my lx3 then and test it out .... prob by the time i know how to set all these things then i can get a DSLR or GF1 :p

ylime...i saw pink and white GF1 in best denki the other time...it comes with the compact lens (hope i got the right word) though

You mean u wanna apply a vintage feel to your photos, i.e. a tinge of sepia?

can LX3 get shallow DOF??

unless you shoot miniature toys all the time, you cannot get good bokeh for NORMAL human sized subjects.

i have owned both LX3 and GF1 b4..

if TS wants to get bokeh effect..
it will be easier to achieve with the GF1 and 20mm F1.7 lens (great for low light and bokeh)..

LX3 can get the bokeh effect but harder to achieve..

the above was taken with LX3 @ F2.0

this was taken with GF1 @ F1.7 with 20mm lens

from my experience..
if u want to get bokeh effects..
it is possible to do so with both cameras..
but easier with the GF1 esp the 20mm lens..

hmmmmm...so how huh ? i'm abit confused which cam for me liaoz...
btw.. wat's TS?
if i use GF1 14mm that lens... can i achieve the same result too?
