Just ask him if he will switch off the fridge if he leave the house:bsmilie: Explain to him how much your gear costs and the small amount is needed to maintain it. Cleaning up of fungus will cost a lot more.

The digital/analog is the display. The rest of it are the same.
The controls are not set to achieve a RH. It's turned on a hopefully dries at a rate that brings the RH down to desired. So you'll see it varying as a function of the weather. Why? A real control will put it out of most of our pockets.
The analog is better. Does not require power. You can tell its working from a distance - just like you can tell the time from the approx position of the hands but have to read the exact numbers on a digital watch to know the time.
