I am not very sure also, but the main different is, gaffer tape don't left much stick residue on the surface you stick on, or can be easily clear away.
Some people gaffer up their camera or lens to reduce scratch mark etc to retain their resell value. They can remove the gaffer tape easily for resell. Some use it to make it not so obvious with black or even jungle marking pattern (for bird shooter).

u buy the ABC kind... prepare your camera for overhaul lor... its super sticky and leave alot of residue... and its DUCT TAPE... not gaffer...
