G9

seriously, you pay for what you get. G9 is a superior camera to the flagship P5100 (supposedly flagship from nikon). Nikon not really into the prosumer level stuff at PNS level.

My opinion is P5100 is good enough for your requirements if you're not particular. But bear in mind 2 things. Build/image quality not as good as G9. And focusing and shuttering is slower. G9 is a much faster camera. Other that these 2, I think the rest of the functions offered by g9 is not too much of a concern for you.

Hi Peek,

Thanks for all your help once again. I'm still searching for more P5100 and G9 Like Cameras so that I can test it out this weekend. I gotta agree that the feel of G9 is second to none. Feels really solid and good. So far I've found the P60 by nikon but not much reviews online...Ricoh cameras looks good also but the reviews on dpreview are quite bad!!

I wonder if I will get shot by ricoh supporters if I say, dun get ricoh... not about the quality... but about what accessories can you find for it easily?

seems like Richo not much in the camera world.....depends but reviews r really quite bad:( G9 surely more promising and Nikon more on dslr cams...Canon's other SX100IS much cheaper but has that same feel the Nikon P60 offers. Lumix offers several models as solid and good might wanna try that out too.

In terms of looks, Lumix quite there also. The other one is Sony. But then again... looks hor... not commenting about anything else.

emirates,

actually size is quite a huge factor for me as well. G9 is almost the biggest I'm willing to go. The main reason why I'm hesitating with the G9 is because of the price. I understand the price is higher that P5100 because it has more features (i.e. RAW). But I really dun wanna pay more for something I won't use. =(

well, if your concern is price and if you do not mind warranty issues, you can get the G9 in japan <$600 if I'm not wrong.. ;p

Good one. The problem will be getting to Japan. HAHA!! plus I don't really feel safe without a waranty these days. I'm trying to convince myself that it is indeed worth it to splurge in the G9. lol.

im going there next month ;p haha.. have to admit the g9 is really high end for a compact camera. with such a price, you can easily get a entry level dslr.. most of us pay for it because we feel it justifies what the camera offers us.. so in the end, be comfortable with what you are getting and the cost of it..

I think SX100 is not a bad choice either..

Size wise it's similar. And no big lens protrusion too. But most importantly, you got to go down to hold all the cameras in your hands before you decide. Feel and handling is important too. Construction can be gauged by touching the dials and the buttons and in the case of a swivel screen, using it. One of the best places to try holding all the cameras, Best Denki, cos their cameras are all displayed on stands and you can play with them without pressure from saleshawk. The other place is Suntec Carrefour, also similar layout. And currently the salesgirl there very new and sotong, so you can just keep trying and she won't care. :P Only problem is, they don't have the G9 for you to try. All other models (camera) mentioned here are available for test drive, with battery too!

I agree that feel and to physical hold it is important too...

Likewise even you pay premium for extra features i.e. RAW but you hardly use it, then at least consider this: image quality. See this comparison shots of P5100 vs G9 at DPReview: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikonp5100/page11.asp

For me, this is the page that convinces me to get the G9... 'Enuff said...

Cheers! ;)

Looks like we were on the same page when we made the same decision. ;)

Ahh... so you're gonna test your patience this weekend? haha. Last parting shot for the weekend... buy G9, you won't regret in terms of performance. My personal motto for you : "Buy cheap buy twice".

Test Patience? Cos too crowded is it? haha. I went to John 3:16 the other day. Weekday night but already quite crowded. Asked to see the G9. Samuel recommended the ricoh GX100 too. He's really nice showed me all the functions but personally he feels GX100 is better due to wide lens. But it's too expensive for the camera. I can think of more reasons why G9 is so ex. I like the G9 just that it's a bit too thick. GX100 size is really good

It's back to the same questions and I'm beginning to sound like broken record already... haha... for me, cameras is a work of science, governed by laws of physics, which we cannot defy. For example, you need more light on the sensor, you will need bigger lens, larger aperture, and as such, camera size will be compromised. Today, we can also squeeze 4 x 5mp sensor (those from handphones) into a very small slim compact body. and give it one of those very small compact lense from the handphone and there you go! Super compact super slim super duper nuper buper (watever) camera. But if we have to go back to the laws of physics when it comes to Light and Cameras, my second personal motto for you : SMALL IS NOT GOOD. GOOD IS NOT SMALL.

I just bought the G9. As broke as broke can be. =((. Any tips on what to do with it first? I'm a total noob just to let you guys know first
