G7 or A710?

Given a choice between the G7 and A710 I'd go for the A series unless I absolutely must have a hotshoe. The G7 has none of the great features of the G series - flip out screen, RAW capture, BP-511 batteries, CF card, etc which make it a great backup for your DSLR (which is how I used it). Now it is yet another P&S like the A710 but with a hotshoe. May as well get the 710 since it runs on AA's and is smaller and lighter.

Incorporates the Face Detection AF and Face Priority functions, which work hand-in-hand to capture stunning photos of subjects’ faces with sharpness and right exposure easily.

- Face Detection AF: Detects as many as 9 subjects’ faces in a picture. If no faces are detected the AF system automatically switched to the conventional 9-point AiAF setting.

- Face Priority: Automatically determines the ideal exposure setting for a perfectly-exposed picture even in difficult situations where subjects are set against a backlit or dark background.

From canon webbie... ;)

When are they going to come out with a FD (fish detection) for diver? ;p

Face priority is cool! So in backlit situation will it automatically use fill-in flash to light up the person's face?

i will consider G7 if it comes with fast lens...

G7 : 1/1.8" sensor
A710 IS : 1/2.5" sensor

Now you see why A710 is lighter :) They are different in class of sensor. The bigger the sensor, the more background blur you will get, if you need it, of course ;)

Now I know why DigicIII is less noisy, bigger sensor.

I didn't know about the relation between background blur and sensor size, thanks for sharing.

The difference in dof between those two sensor sizes is almost immaterial. However, in addition to that, there should also be a (very) slight improvement in picture quality and high ISO performance.

Also, DIGIC III is a branding for an image-conversion engine, which takes sensor data and converts it into images. It's not related to sensor size per se.
