Cheng are you using a macro lens? Anyway good concept, though quite repeated already haha. Such pics are difficult to do in Singapore as we're nearer the equator, the effect isn't so drastic due to gravitational effects. Doesn't have the 'swirl' look.


Skyguy, try using aluminium foils as reflectors and guide some daylight in from different directions... since you can't use an off-shoe flash. :) Can try different types of liquids too!

Personally I feel too lazy to do these kind of shots though, how many takes and retakes did you do to get those? Haha.


No macro, just the kit lens used. Got as close as possible and still had to crop. Took about 50 shots just to get a few keepers.

I did not know you can't get the same effect near equator. Would a higher drop make a difference?

rwcheng, i would recommend you position the camera lower, so you can see the drop from the side, instead of the top..

The effect would be nicer :D

So what does being close to the equator have to do with gravity, please explain. Remember you are talking about a drop of water falling, nothing to do with the direction of a vortex.
Gravity is gravity, in Singapore or St. Louis.
 

Hi guys sorry I'm in a rush of time.

you know how a large volume of water passes through a small hole? like a sink
the swirl direction is different for the N and S hemisphere and its very different near the equator too. This is probably an exaggerated example, since the case above is a single droplet.

Furthermore, waves in different equators form different patterns too.

This is impressionally the points I remember from a science facts site, it may not be the most credible, hence I am willing to accept any good correction :)


My personal opinion: (just hypothetically)
In anycase, the earth is not perfectly round, and gravity may not be consistently directly towards the core of the earth. Since gravity is only related to mass as = GMm/r^2. If you draw an axis vertical to where you're standing, and project it that it disects the earth, you may notice that both halfs are not symmetrical, hence their masses on both half exert a different gravitational force upon you, (at least it won't ever be perfectly vertical). Arguably, this may be a negligible effect, however, water is not very heavy, but its mobility allows a pressure to build up amidst the solution itself. Which does magnify the axial gravitational displacement.

Then again, I'm no science teacher, (and sorry if my phrasing is rather laxed), do enlighten me if you find my hypothesis flawed :)

anyway, i think the effect rwcheng did was not the swirl effect... its the ripple of the drop of water bah... anyway if it is the swirl its quite possible also, as he put a plastic bag to cover the exit of the water, which lower the flowrate and force water to exit sideway to slip between the gap of the sink and plastic, which coz it to swirl

The effect of a single drop of water would not cause any coriolis effect that would be perceivable no matter where in the world you conducted the experiment. All I am saying is that the same shot could be taken anywhere and it would be impossible to say which ripple pattern came from the northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere or right on the equator , given all were taken under the same conditions with the same equipment.
I am really impressed by rwcheng's pics but I thought the colour change was achieved by putting different coloured plastic bags under the clear bowl. I thought the swirling may have been caused by tipping the bowl slightly from side to side while the self timer was counting down. I just would like to know if the shots were taken using Hi-speed burst mode? It does take a lot of shots to get the few really special ones, well done:thumbsup:
 

Anyway, guys calm down, we are photographers, not scientists. So as long as we take good photos, who cares which part of earth give more swirl. And swirl can be man-made :P

shot >700pictures with my FZ28, and still have 1bar left. Of course, all without flash, i'm amazed with the stamina of the batt, though i composed almost every shot with EVF. The 18x zoom is good but holding it dead-still at that range without tripod is very shag

Very impressive shots for an FZ28 in a concert environment. Was the lighting really good? I don't seem to detect noise.

erm, to be honest, the lightings were very unpredictable, changing colours, strobe lights, intensity changes, smoke screens... which explains why i had to take so many shots to get a few right. haha

Reason for low noise was because i was shooting at iso100-200.
Want to guess at what shutter speed i shot them at? :bsmilie:

I just wanted low noise pictures, somehow lucky to get away with these pictures.
 

I'm guessing your shutter speed was quite low? Less den 1/60?
 

1/15 - 1/30

to be fair, if you view it at 100%, it's going to disappoint the keen eye.
 

Thats why the resolution of the photos you posted are small :P
 

yep, must know my own weakness ma, and conceal it.
can view at 640x480 without prob lah (or 1048 with one eye closed), just that i set the resolution at my blog already, lazy to upload again.

Just like to ask if anyone found the pix a little soft. 'cos when i tried pp sharpen, it seems to look better.

however i have to agreed. its only in theory.
Dont maybe if the 3dams in china bursted their banks then we could see some different effects. as you guys are talkin about

a sea bass splash is unmistakable!

Hi vinze, it has been a long time since I heard from you. We must organize a fishing trip when I am there in June /July.
Amy and I went fishing and crabbing yesterday, only 1 bream lots of catfish and one humungus mudcrab. We had trouble finishing it for dinner between the two of us.
The prime fishing time in Darwin is approaching but it looks as though I will miss out because I have to go into hospital for a small operation, only in overnight but two weeks of recovery, that means no fishing.
