Full frame or not?

yep, this is true. i started off with a canon 1000n (1994?) before upgrading to a eos 50 in 1996. never really got used to a crop sensor, so i recently decided to give up my 40d for a 5dm2. besides, i'm sure i will be able to unleash the full potential of my L lenses with a FF!

I feel any digital sensor can utilize the optical quality of any L lens. Not only 5DmkII. Full potential lies in the hands of the photographer in the composition.

I agree that 5DmkII and 7D sensor color are much richer than 40D though....

Most important, have fun shooting.... as long as you are not getting into heavy debts.... ;)

I've tried Tamron's 28-300 VC and IQ is pretty gd. Optics have been improved as compared to older variants of this lens.

I see.... I think 28-300 range is good, and if IQ is ok, then, maybe you should consider it?

IMHO... learn photography and fun with your 500D. Its a good camera. No rush to get into FF that soon.

Well... different people have different comfort zone, and FF is too ex for you and it is ok. No worry... just enjoy shooting with whatever gears you have and enjoy!! ;)

Haha, it is not too ex for me, it is just to ex for wifey...:) I could have easily buy a new 5DII every few months, and use it like a disposable camera, but alas, I'm not the CFO of the house...:(

I find myself asking these questions when I get the BBB virus for FF.

1) Can you easily afford the 5D II? If not, are you going to be making $$$ out of it?

2) Are you that certain that you cannot improve your skills anymore such that the only way up is an increase in CMOS size?

3) Won't the money be better spent travelling to take pictures?

Usually the answer for the first 2 is no and the last one yes.

I don't see the point in avoiding EF-S lenses just for the "possibility" of upgrading in the future. You are depriving yourself of one awesome 10-22 and another 17-55.

Good you can remain rational... some guys here are more weak than woman and fall for advertorial temptation.

I would not say I would be depriving myself on UWA. I saved money by not getting another lens.

I use a film cam and get the ultra wide perspective from my 17-40mm.... I usually do not need this range, unless I wanna should landscape.... maybe distortion is not as good, but I got my UWA range. Film processing.... some cost, but the feeling of loading and shooting slides is a totally different experience.

It was much cheaper last time....

Canon is unlikely to release a 7D FF. With the features of 7D, its more likely Canon release the feature pack FF as 3D. It'll be priced higher than 5D series but below 1Ds.

Well... we will not know... but with the competition getting hot... FF price will lower, and Canon will have to fight against the competitors.... who know what they will do to fend their territories....

Never say never.....

Haha... then, with CFO.... better be a good boy...

It is moment like this that I think being single has it's advantages too....

I do agree with you too, but it is also good to have a CFO around to control myself financially, or I'll probably die without a penny when I grow old....:)

But seriously, I really don't see the need for FF for myself, as I'm not into landscapes and having done some shots with both the 5DII and 7D, the IQ is pretty close, and the ISO noise become significant after 3200, and for that, you really need to pixel peep. As I shoot candid closeups of children and also animals most of the time, the crop body gives me extra reach, and I'm happy thus far. :)

Our objective in life is never to get into debts, and today, we are debt free liao, and that's more impt than owning big house, fast cars and mistresses (for me, that is ;p)

Canon likes to pop out 1-2 models out end of "each yr" for ppl to buy =s

For me, I would consider myself financially controlled by myself.. so I am ok.... No need CFO... lol...

To own big house, fast cars, etc... all only = donation to our MILLIONS DOLLARS Ministers.... and the principle behind.. to me, is faulted.... to pay this rage of salary...

I think the best comb for hobbyist would be a FF & a 1.6 crop... best of both world. Well, I expect FF price to fall in 3 yrs.

Just hope they POP out something I want at the right price!!! lol....

Well... it is getting fierce....

Sony is a hard nut.... coming in and all action... ready to rock and roll and with "SONY" brand... sure got some Sony hard core pnss upgrade to Sony SLR...

Oly is a good old player.. and their PEN is arousing a lot of interest... If it is MIJ, I might take a closer look....

Nikon, old time rival and now, more active player in this market...and market getting tighter..... will fight harder and offer more options...

Canon gotta keep arousing more BBB virus to keep it up... and well... more surprises in the line... good news for us, and FF price will fall in 3 yrs time...

Then what is left for 1.6 crops price? :dunno::dunno: :bsmilie:

All below $1K :bsmilie:

Quality is always lower when Price is low.
Higher technology in theory is better but not always so in practical.

Profit $ = Price of product - Cost of product.

If one were to sell at a low price, then very soon we will not see DSLR camera manufacture in Japan anymore.

The choice is yours.

lol profit is not price of product - cost of product

there are still variable and fixed costs with respect to many things like marketing, distribution, retention of fixed assets blah blah blah

well there is a term for price - cost of product though.. its called contribution ;)

But if one is not "PRO" meaning making money from shooting. Why not go cropped? Unless you really have the cash to spare. But then again... 5DM2 has been around for awhile... Why not go for newer tech? Or wait for 5DM3?? heh

Agree! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

IMHO, I will choose FF over crop anytime. Used to have the 30D,40D but the noise level simply cannot be compared to the classic 5D. The bokeh also much nicer giving you the beautiful FF look. If you shoot for hobby and IQ is important to you, just get a classic 5D from the B&S. You wouldn't regret it.
