Fujifilm X100S

Bro please compare apple to apple, you will also need to lower your expectation when compare to dslr. I am sure you are dslr users and new to mirrorless huh? Since you already get x100s, You have to learn the limitation, make full use of it and ignore snob dslr users comments. Not to worry too much, many people here own high end dslr and use mirrorless as secondary camera or have switched totally as their main camera. Once you get the hang of it, it will be as good as your dslr.

Some of his complaints have nothing to do with mirror less cameras. It's simply a matter of doing a better research before buying something.

Anyone wants to share their JPEG settings?

Here's mine:

Film Simulation: Provia
Dynamic Range: Auto
Color: High
Sharpness: M-Hard
Highlight Tone: M-Hard
Shadow Tone: M-Hard
Noise Reduction: M-Low
White Balance: Auto

I like punchy colors and I'm too lazy to shoot RAW for personal use. :)

A quick review after using it for a week:

PROS
1) Love the colours + bokeh for a camera this (physical) size!
2) Good low-light performance. Though NR is aggressive; soft looking images. However, cannot complain for compact size cam.
3) Viewfinder! More comfy + stable position to shoot in; akin to DSLR.

CONS
1) Very clunky / non-intuitive interface. Can't beat Nikon Canon interfaces. Throw it to a random friend and they'll pass the cam back to you in 1 min... too difficult to navigate...

Well that's interesting. The Fuji's interface is similar to both current Canon [Q menu wise] and Nikon [Settings Menu] interface. Though it's not the best I've seen but definitely not difficult. In fact it's better than the old X100.

2) Weird controls... IMO at least. Don't like the shutter speed knob, EV knob and how the Left-right toggle functions. Would prefer controls of a typical DSLR. Especially missing the rolling-ratchet thumbwheels on your DSLRs. Hope there's a way to re-map the controls to our own functions?

Ever used a SLR or Rangefinder or any old camera back in the film days? Those had similar knobs. Some users even buy the Thumbs Up to replace the feel of the film advance lever present on old film cameras. I do agree that left-right thumb lever thing is silly though. If you want DSLR type controls, why buy the X100S in the first place?

3) Even in decent lighting, AF is a little slow, when compared to my oldish D40 :(

The AF is pretty fast, but isn't consistent, that's for sure. Performance drops mainly indoors and at night. But fast enough for candid shots. The only mirrorless camera that I've tested to be as fast or faster than a typical DSLR is the OMD I find.

4) Shot-to-shot delay is irritating. 0.5 secs at least. My D40 allows me to snap and take the 2nd shot very quickly. The X100s? "...saving file" zzz... Used .jpeg Large. Other settings seem slower! i.e. RAW / smaller file size jpegs.

Sounds like a slow SD card you got in there? I don't really have that issue. Or maybe you have a faster trigger finger than me? You can use burst mode on the X100S if you want to take frame after frame rapidly. It's not the best, but it works properly unlike the X100. FYI I used to shoot RAW on my X100.

5) Full auto settings are wonky. Sometimes good, sometimes overexposed. D40 seemed to nail it 90% of the time.

I don't know much about that. I have not had any issues with the auto mode on my X100. Never used auto mode on the X100S yet (usually use it only if I want a passerby to take a photo etc) so I can't comment.

6) Battery indicator not accurate? It was 3 bars (full) then dropped to 2, 1 and flat in less than 50 shots... Any way to calibrate the battery level indicator?

Common issue since the X100. I don't trust the battery meter on my X100 and X100S. When it goes 2 bar, it may run from 2 to 1 to 0 bar very very fast. That's why I always turn the camera off when not taking a photo and bring along an extra battery just in case.

7) Fixed lens. Indoor room shots are tricky, outdoor landscape shots too. I miss my 18-55 lens... Ok, I'm lazy to leg-zoom :(

Get used to it. Millions of people already have. Even the average joe with a smartphone has gotten used to a 30-35ish mm fixed prime lens on their phone. (the zooming is bogus, it just crops the picture)

Still learning how to maximize this cam. Fellow users, pls share your tips :) Thanks in advance!

There you go. Though it would seem an OMD would have served u better than the X100S overall.

As for those with the OVF brightness issue. It has been around since the X100 days. I have to always half press the shutter to get the frame lines adjust it's brightness. Used to it and not a biggie to me.

Why did you buy the camera? I don't get it...

Thanks for taking the time LiquifireX, appreciate the feedback :)

2) Never shot film; only familiar with my old D40. I wanted the performance of a DSLR but in a m43 size, an optical viewfinder is a must - The X100s seemed to fit that requirement.

3) Yes, I suppose the AF inconsistency is a bigger issue than the AF speed.

4) The free Class 4 Toshiba 16gb SD that came with the camera. Sorry, reading your comment and thinking back, I phrased it wrongly. It's not shot-to-shot delay, more of focus-shoot, refocus-shoot delay? More apt to say AF speed.

6) Any 3rd party NP-95 battery to recommend?

7) Point noted about the fixed lens. Yup, will need to spend more time to get used to framing + functions of the camera.

Once again, thanks for spending the time to help out a newbie :) Learning more thru such discussions

There's the Canon 100D. Closest thing to what you described. But that's out the question being a Nikon user yourself.

Ditto. Luckily for us, manual focus works a treat on the X100S unlike the X100. Give that a go if AF fails you.

Do yourself a favor and get a class 10 card or above if you can. Everything will be faster, including write speeds. This camera was designed for the film/rangefinder users in mind. 1 shot at a time, not rapid fire single shots. Practice anticipating and capturing the decisive moment instead of spraying and praying. However, by no means is this a sports camera. The D300S or D7100 would fit that bill at the same price or less.

6) Any 3rd party NP-95 battery to recommend?

I used a Chromage battery back when I had my X100. I didn't notice much difference between it and the original. However I'm using a spare original now though, as it came free with the promo.

7) Point noted about the fixed lens. Yup, will need to spend more time to get used to framing + functions of the camera.

Yup. Build on the strengths on the camera, and you'll probably love it as much as us X100S users do. If many loved the original X100 despite it's flaws (Slow AF, cumbersome ergonomics, unusable MF, etc), why can't you, especially when you've got what the X100 should have been?

No problem! Read the manual, look up guides and forums, even the X100 ones, which are still quite relevant to the X100S in certain aspects.

There you go! Happy shooting! ;)

Pro Negative Standard seems to give the best skin tones for Asian
skins .. better than Astia

Just join the club last night. x100s is very light compared to DSLR. :bsmilie:
So far, so good...pretty impressive with the IQ on this small vintage looking camera.

I used almost the same profile setting for my XE 1. Wonder whether it produce the same result. And I also shoot jpec only .Film setting is always Standard. Vivid is definately too strong for my liking.

I'm definitely gonna try some of your settings :)

my latest setting:

Dynamic range = Auto

Color = +2
Sharpness = +2
Highlight tone = 0
Shadow tone = 0

Hi guys, joined the X100S not long ago. A quick question, if i want to protect the lens with a UV filter.. how should i go about it?
Do I need a filter adapter in order to do so? Can anyone recommend me a adapter (that can work with B+w uv filter) that i can buy in funan?

Would appreciate if you can provide some 3rd party options. I heard original Fuji filter adapter is expensive.

Thanks in advance.

I used the JJC brand (third party) Lens Hood Set, which came with the filter adaptor, I got it at $35 at T* Photo.

How are you finding those settings? Especially at ISO3200 and 6400?

My is similar but I only +-1 and use ProNegative Std. The skin tones are very good but other colors a little flat. Sharpness seems ok though not super sharp. Noise seems ok ..

if talking abt noise, i even shoot with ISO12800 and still find noise level ok for me.

Noise is alright but how about the dynamic range? Especially the colors?
