Fujifilm X100S

spotted a software bug.

upon switching on the camra, the ovf bright frame doesnt auto dim or brighten based on lighting condition. its basically stuck until either the play function is carried out or a photo is taken etc. basically the shutter needs to be activated then the dimming or brightening will take effect.

the above condition ia intermitent. maybe abt 20% of the times when power up.

Or like an USB port or a VF. WiFi is actually pretty useful and doesn't cost much.

Yes wifi is pretty useful. I'm currently using a Flashair card with my X100s.

I encountered this as well. It goes away when a photo is taken. Hopefully this will get fixed on tge next firmware update.

yah i hope so too. very irritating when started up in low light environment and can't see anything behind the brightly lighted frame in OVF.

But doesnt seems that this is widely discussed so Fuji guys might not aware of this for FW update?

1) i realised that the OVF power mgt has an effect on the white frame, it has some lag when i put my eyes near the ovf (sensor activated)

2) encountered a few card errors when switching it on upon taking it out from PC (have to switch off and then on again to get it working)

3) the white frame (OVF) upon half press and lock focus; it shifts a bit making framing tough

#2. never encountered this before though i always transfer the pics directly from the SD card (instead of using the provided usb cable). Have you tried your SD card on other cameras? see if it's the card issue or not.

#3. it's the parallax issue of rangefinder. please check this link for explanation

1. no comment as i use 90% OVF, 10% EVF. dun use the eye sensor

2. do not encounter this before

3. normal as the frame counters the parallex error. one way to stop this is to use the wide convertor. then you wont see the outer frame

will monitor this card error issue. i can carry on shooting after switch it off and on.. never tried using the card on another camera as i like to keep the card separate from em5 that i am shooting with as well

3) i am not referring to the focusing box (i don't switch on the Auto correct AF).... I am referring to the white frame that shifts entirely when half press using the OVF..

Can the x100s do super marco shot?

the X100s is a street camera. it's current ability to take macro shots is already a bonus.

if macro is what you're doing, then the X100s will not satisfy you much.

Nope, not really. Macro is so-so.

The X100S can't take anything you would consider proper macro these days, it can't go down to 1.0x magnification. The maximum it can do is close-up shots.

Yes my thoughts exactly.

A quick review after using it for a week:

PROS
1) Love the colours + bokeh for a camera this (physical) size!
2) Good low-light performance. Though NR is aggressive; soft looking images. However, cannot complain for compact size cam.
3) Viewfinder! More comfy + stable position to shoot in; akin to DSLR.

CONS
1) Very clunky / non-intuitive interface. Can't beat Nikon Canon interfaces. Throw it to a random friend and they'll pass the cam back to you in 1 min... too difficult to navigate...
2) Weird controls... IMO at least. Don't like the shutter speed knob, EV knob and how the Left-right toggle functions. Would prefer controls of a typical DSLR. Especially missing the rolling-ratchet thumbwheels on your DSLRs. Hope there's a way to re-map the controls to our own functions?
3) Even in decent lighting, AF is a little slow, when compared to my oldish D40 :(
4) Shot-to-shot delay is irritating. 0.5 secs at least. My D40 allows me to snap and take the 2nd shot very quickly. The X100s? "...saving file" zzz... Used .jpeg Large. Other settings seem slower! i.e. RAW / smaller file size jpegs.
5) Full auto settings are wonky. Sometimes good, sometimes overexposed. D40 seemed to nail it 90% of the time.
6) Battery indicator not accurate? It was 3 bars (full) then dropped to 2, 1 and flat in less than 50 shots... Any way to calibrate the battery level indicator?
7) Fixed lens. Indoor room shots are tricky, outdoor landscape shots too. I miss my 18-55 lens... Ok, I'm lazy to leg-zoom :(

Still learning how to maximize this cam. Fellow users, pls share your tips :) Thanks in advance!

only tips i can think of, sell it and use back a dslr

Btw, any recommendations to protect the lens? Adaptor + filter?

Bro please compare apple to apple, you will also need to lower your expectation when compare to dslr. I am sure you are dslr users and new to mirrorless huh? Since you already get x100s, You have to learn the limitation, make full use of it and ignore snob dslr users comments. Not to worry too much, many people here own high end dslr and use mirrorless as secondary camera or have switched totally as their main camera. Once you get the hang of it, it will be as good as your dslr.
