Fujifilm X-E2

Had another small shoot a few days ago. I think for shooting people with relying only on SOCC JPEGs, can use at most ISO3200. Once you use ISO6400, people's faces look obviously plastic with JPEG (even with NR -2). But if you had the raw file, you will retain the detail, but you don't benefit from Fuji's great strength of excellent JPEGs and got to do so much more work. So if you are shooting up to ISO6400, need to shoot with JPEG + RAW.

I still ran into the problem of the focus at night. It was at a dinner party. The face detection did not work very well, maybe affected by back lights. When pass my XE2 to someone, a few times they had problem getting the shutter to release. And a few times the focus won't lock on just two people.

And for some reason, when I put on the EF-20 flash, at -1 EV it started grossly over exposing. In the end I took it off and use the built in flash which worked fine. Still no idea why.

In a dinner and dance, the background lighting is usually very low, so have to rely on flash, but still hoping to get some ambient light. With the 18-55mm working around F3.2 (due to 23mm setting), 1/30 ISO 3200/6400 still not good enough. If I use a prime (which I don't have), I loss stabilisation, so I would end up with F1.4/2, 1/60, ISO 3200/6400, not much difference.

Maybe Olympus EM-1 better, if I work with a prime F1.8, 1/15 or 1/8 ISO 3200 I gain at least 2-3 stops. So far, not very impressed or happy with the XE2. Maybe need more time to work on it. Any thoughts on this?

Some adjustments are probably necessary since it is a switch between system and the feel is likely to be different as well. However, this do not necessary short change you of the joy in shooting.

Similarly, I found weight and bulk of my gear an issue and made a switch from a slr to Rollei35s many years back. This was a great decision, although I had to adjust to the framing differences (parallax error) and scale focusing, it also liberated me from the inconveniences I faced, allowing me to shoot a lot more. Of course, I still switch back to a dslr when the shoot calls for it, e.g. wedding and studio.
When I tried the X-system (all three of them), there is some getting use to. However, since I was never good at the features of a modern dslr it was a fairly quick process. More importantly, the images they produced were so good to me that it made everything else easy to live with. As for X-E2, I just bought it for about a week and it has been great using it, light, compact and great images.

Overall, I suggest that you rent the X-Pro1 with the kit lens to try it out first. It allows you to toggle between the EVF and optical, that how I found out that the optical finder is not as important to me as I previously thought. Anyway, through trying, you may find that the differences provided by the X-system to be something welcoming. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am hesitant that I would greatly missed the experience of using the optical viewfinder when I shift in using the Fuji x-system.

i wish i could jump ship here

I had the same hesitation initially. I tried a few mirrorless cameras at the camera stores and didn't like the evf feel. It's pretty "unreal" and "lags" as I pan the camera, it is just so different from the optical finder. So I rented the X100s n X-pro1 to try out and see which one to get. Surprisingly, I find that the evf was more practical and grew to like it as well. It seems that the "unreal" feel actually gave me a better sense on how the pictures will turn out before I take it.
Perhaps I'm odd, perhaps it is also the fact that fuji x system offers a great package overall, i.e. images quality, user experience (controls etc), the style factor, etc, causing me to compromise willingly. Either way, I really suggest that you rent one to play with for a session or two. It gave me the confidence to get the x-e2 and I'm good with the evf now. You never know until you try, right?:)

Hi Guys,

I have an issue to have focus peaking or digital split mf assist on manual lens like voightlander/ leica with fuji x-e2, i have set to shooting without lens and mf assist to focus peaking. Is there any other setting that i miss?
However, if i am using fujinon lenses, the focus peaking function work great.

Kindly enlighten me please

Did you flick the front AF switch to MF ?

Ya that should be the answer, I guess he must be using 14mm or 23mm where switching to manual on the lens will activate the focus peaking.

I have dump Nikon for Fujifilm!
I just purchased this XE2... and am exploring it now... but hmm, how come my flash is always in Auto? How do I set to forced flash???

is there a training course for new camera users by Fujifilm Company?

I don't think so but you can join the outing on Sunday to learn from experience users.

Haha... I found my answer. Thanks to the manual, troubleshooting portion. :) Tip: Don't put ur camera in silent mode.

Hi,
will be flying to Hokkaido next week and was wondering if the x-e2 might be cheaper in JP (e.g. airport). Was trying to check on warranty but couldn't get decent info.

Does fuji provide international warranty ? thx

Current canon dslr user... Tempted to switch to mirrorless for some time due to back pain shoulder pain hand pain after carrying the camera for shooting whole day... Been eyeing fujifilm for quite some time now, the best so far as i can see for mirrorless camera...

Looking at the xmas deal seems tempting, wonder gifts still got stock or not... Maybe will check it out at funan coming weekend... If can get a good deal most probably will go for x-e2...

DSLR still best for work but for travel or street photography mirrorless will get the job done
Nice choice to go for Fuji X-E2

Previously A77 user then went to Nex 5R for light and smaller package.

Recently sold all my Alpha gear and dive into the XE2, what I can say is WOW and I do regret not getting it EARLIER!!!

Had been holding on to the change as XPRO1 was damn expensive and XE1 had medicore AF speed. Since XE2 has the improved AF and new sensor, the decision for me was easy.

In terms of image quality, I would say Fuji is the best in APSC sensors. Impressive colours and noiseless even up to ISO3200, and this is the first cam i owned that i do not hesitate to use ISO6400 frequently.

I managed to shoot my son's concert 2 weeks ago with very low lighting. I only used the kit lens and ISO6400 and managed to keep my shutter speed at 1/125s to capture all the movements and dancing on stage. I have never been able to do that with my previous gears without flash.

Even with the built in flash, i am able to get really nice fill flash while maintaining the background still nicely exposed. Somehow Fuji is very good in balancing the both, even shooting with flash, ISO still maintains quite high at ISO3200 or so and yet still its noiseless.

I am sold to XE2, its the best cam ever for me. Unless you have the $ to go for A7, this is the best cam money can buy.

One more thing, the kit lens 18-55 f2.8-4 is fantastic. Its very sharp wide open and corner sharpness is good, in terms of kit lens, it is the best and its 1 stop faster than most. Coupled with the fantastic high ISO of XE2, this combination is the low light beast.

U should check out the XF35/1.4or XF23/1.4 if u intend to get some interestingly smooth bokeh and even better low light capability on the X-E2.

I'm not using DSLR for work, mainly just to shoot for travel and fun... recently i lost the motivation to really go out and shoot with my current DSLR... maybe mirrorless is the answer for me to spark my fire again... will get a proper hands on hopefully at this weekend... where is the best place to get the best deal for camera stuff?
