This is a mini-review on the S100FS by a user without any commercial interests on the camera's sale.

My own opinions :
To me, the versatility of 28-400mm field of view (on 35mm format equivalent) without the need to change lens is the main attraction.

Picture quality is better than any prosumer camera in the same class but not as good as a DSLR. Not surprising given the superior Fujifilm 8th generation Super CCD but its 2/3" image sensor is smaller than the APS-C size used in DSLR.

Purple fringing from the lens seems to be a blemish at this point. Hopefully, this problem can be reduced when the newer batches get manufactured in due course.

As feared earlier with any long zoom lens, it's not as sharp when fully zoomed.

There is no information regarding focusing speed which is very important in shooting moving subjects (e.g. sports, fashion shows runway walk etc.).

There is also no info on focusing accuracy and speed in low light. This is crucial in shooting people in indoor situations. The S6500fd suffers somewhat quite badly in this regard although probably better than the Olympus SP 550/560.

It's still better to wait and see first.

High ISO performance seems to be slightly better than the S6500fd despite a higher pixel density which tends to have more noise unless technology is improved.

anyone knows what kind of external flash unit can be used with the s100fs?

any manual flash will do with reasonable cycle times..wish it has ttl functions..sofar great cam..

Hi clockunder,

May I say that I am in no way disputing anything you have writen above.

I check dpreview at least once every 2 days to see what is written about various cameras....
I sell cameras and am interested to read what dpreview have to say about them.... but...

A lot of what dpreview say or make comment of about cameras is beyond what the average camera buyer need worry about.

If I may expand on that statement .... purple fringing on the s100fs is most likely not going to be noticeable to most users unless the really look for it.

I think that dpreview do a good job at testing cameras, but, I also think that the general camera buyer can be put off by some of the reviews if taken too closely.

As an example: there have been often times it has been stated as a (con) that some DSLR's will shut down when the card door is opened......

I can't think of any time I have opened the card door when shooting.

Sorry to ramble on.

A camera such as the s100fs is (to my belief) the closest we have at present to a DSLR and it beats all else in the market by many margins.

Just a view from me :)

er, you sure? does that means those canon or nikon flashes also can be used? cos i went MS color, they said that the S100FS only has a single flash pin, therefore there is only one model/type of flash unit that can be used on the S100FS. And that compatible flash unit is some china flash, $60 only. i was like :dunno::bigeyes:

the single contact point is probably just to allow the camera to trigger the flash, and not to let the camera communicate with the flash, so no ttl.

So how much is it selling now? ;p

i see... so does that mean that canon or nikon flashes can be used, except that we need to manually set the settings?

your very right, so no point going for an advance canon/nikon flash, unless you have it already. btw, you can get the unit at 850 at alan photo. i am planning for a vivitar manual flash.

this is a great cam, closest to a dslr.. i read a bunch of reviews/discussions about this camera, and lots of em criticizing the specs without even owning this lovely camera. PF is totally very minimal..i even like this cam better than casio exilim pro f1, the quality of fujifilm is way better, clean, and has very nice saturation of colors

On the same bad breath, there are lots of nikon and canon camera camera owners putting down other major makes of camera without ever touching them before

and lots of em criticizing the specs without even owning this lovely camera.

this camera has always been compared to entry level dslr, we cant help it, coz it looks and weighs like one, it might even look bigger than d40x/400d. just for me, its all in an all in one package that got me in it ( lens, looks, image quality, responsiveness)..nuf said, lets go and start shooting, coz thats what this camera is for

is vivatar good? sorry i'm quite noob in flashes... hope u can recommend a good and average priced flash unit to me.

some macro shots ive made..straight from the camera without pp

all are velvia settings
provia is a bit lesser saturation

vivitar is cheaper around 100(+-), though havent really got one yet as of the moment. they say it has reasonable cycle times.

How is the extended dynamic range? Or is it just another name to the nikon's d-lighting or sony's DR+ or Olympus' shadow adjustment technology?

:dunno:
