Fujifilm F200EXR is a GEM

Any bros here can help?It seems that my pics taken from the F200 at nite usually turn out pretty grainy and all.Any solution for that?Usually leave it to the EXR mode for night shots. Thanks

From my experience, best not to use EXR unless you have special needs (eg need to capture the moment, noise not an issue). While EXR will improve on noise, it is not a miracle worker, i.e. it is best amongst the PnS but will not be able to match a DSLR under similar conditions especially since it always chooses ISO1600 for anything less than bright in EXR mode.
Leave it on "P" mode and restrict your ISO to 400 or 800 and you will see the difference. :)

Somehow there is impression that F200EXR performs quite badly at higher ISO than many equiv PnS. I have read of claims suggesting S90 is among the better high ISO performers. If to take S90 as a standard for the better high ISO PnS, we may be in for a nasty surprise on how the resolution trade off for lower noise has apparently escaped the eyes of many.

F200EXR is a gem.
Endless comparison makes no sense.
Just use the one you like. It's simple.

Finally Samsung EX-1 is in Singapore - like F200EXR, another excellent value PnS with capabilities not many PnS dare challenge, perhaps. These 2 cameras might have unleashed more potential of PnS that were kept away from the highly priced PnS. Some discussion at http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6196931#post6196931

Forget about the big brands PnS. They mostly keep their best to DSLR and tease you with alittle bit of goodies hoping to empty your pocket. Some even thought they have Canon IQ when they shoot with S90.

was frantically looking for one in sg. Most shops are out of stock coz fuji has stopped its production and i do not think tt u will be able to get it in IT show unless it is the successor but I think it will be pretty ex with minimal improvements compared to the F200; those pet detection thingy and the rest of those cosmetics stuffs as sensor technology has not advanced much. U may wanna try giving audio house a call. I got mine at $379 last month with 8gb sd card, extra batt, mini tripod, cleaning kit and case.

hey. just to check with everyone. I want to select the DR800% for the F200EXR. but the selection isn't available even when I select EXR mode, D-range priority. Did I miss out anything? Appreciate for the help!

Well DR is set with F-button either in EXR DR mode or P-mode as I shared previously.

But now I often prefer to disable the flash and use a monopod. This recovers the lost stability of PnS when viewing on the LCD without the legacy benefit of pressing the view-finder against the eye bone. With a monopod on my chin, I easily get 2 extra stops shooting steadily with 1/6s at 28mm and 1/30s at 140mm without any need flash.

If I may share the settings which I use most frequently.

Ironically EXR Auto or EXR ... is not the best setting. They often select unnecessarily high ISO.
EXR HR – Good only at ISO100 and often unnecessarily higher ISO selected (without pixel coupling noise control 12Mp). Only DR100 used cos dual capturing not possible at 12MP
EXR DR - up to DR800 but often unnecessary higher ISO selected (with pixel coupling noise control) and disabled flash
EXR SN - Only DR100 used, sacrificing benefits of higher DR which recovers details not possible with most non-DSLR, often unnecessary higher ISO selected (with better pixel coupling noise control) and disabled exposure compensation

P-mode is my most preferred with these settings
Shooting mode - P Program AE
Image size - M 4:3 for 6 MP (for active EXR pixel coupling noise control and DR dual capture as confirmed with Fujifilm)
Flash mode - Auto
Photometry - multi (for better DR contrast sensing)
Focus - spot
Dual IS - on
Film Simulation - Provia mode
F-button setting F-mode
- set ISO to Auto800 (noise beyond which no better than others) or Auto1600 with flash off for available light photography if ISO1600 noise can be accepted
- set Dynamic Range priority to Auto (1/3 stop lost if DR % is fixed)
- image quality to fine for low compression
Note: at P-mode, camera works on the shuttle speeds (and 2 apertures) before increasing eventually to this selected ISO800. DR is increased automatically for overexposure detected in the multi-metering by recovering the loss details from the other half of the 6MP underexposed according to the DR % in a single shot (dual capturing). This explains why only 6MP available in EXR operation. A 6MP with wider DR range usually produces better picture than 12MP with narrower DR range unless the picture is good with just flat exposure (the 2-consecutive shot of Ricoh CX-1's 9MP initiative is adversely affected by subject movement). Similarly, a picture at low light can be pretty ugly for a poorer noise control 12MP as compared to better noise controlled 6MP (not talking of noise suppression).

The weaknesses of most compact digital are too small sensor, noise as ISO increases, loss details because of low DR, smaller aperture, shorter lens for some like LX3, optical quality at extreme zoom for beyond A4 reproduction (only needed occasionally) and any longer optics than 5x is likely compromise under space and weight constraints.

At this point in time, F200EXR has proven to strike a balance in emphasing portability (PDAphone size) with adequate optical range, good resolution, lower noise, wider DR and higher ISO more than most others except big enough aperture. But its ability to handle ISO800 beyond any others make the need of bigger aperture unnecessary, not forgetting the inconvenience of bulk and weight for the faster lens. And between lens size and optical sensor, personally the latter is more important. It seems to me that F200EXR and LX3 are the only non-DSLR generous enough with larger sensor which delivers DR and noise control that most compact digital cameras can only admire.

But one major problem with F200EXR is to discover on the PC monitor that the camera LCD sometimes has betrayed its unusually good picture quality, particularly in the details and absence of noise in low light conditions that very few compact digitals can seriously handle.

Just for your info, causeway point shopping centre level 4, there is a counter beside metro main door, still have F200EXR.

Hi I am testing F200 right now and have constant overexposure problems in high natural light. If i photograph a field of pink and yellow flowers in sunlight, regardless of the mode chosen and even with the exposure compensation, pink flowers constantly come overexposed!
and that is with HDR, too!!! is it a defect camera?
I found no refernces to F200exr overexposing online, do i have a lemon, then?
thanks in advance!

This camera is not exactly point and shoot, perhaps, if you start meddling the setting without enough understanding. Check if you have accidentally set the overcompensation or try using the settings above. Otherwise leave the bad shots inside as proof for warranty.

What is Fujifilm's replacement model for the F200EXR?

It's unfortunate the Fujifilm shyed away from continue producing this excellent yet so affordable camera just because a slight err in the auto EXR.

Finally the JX200 is out, looks like the closest successor resembling F200EXR. It has Full HD video and 16:9 format, exactly what some have wanted. But the lens have to be adjusted to f3.6-f5.9 and sensor reduced to 1/2.3" and no more high dynamic range of EXR - another legacy like F30FD. Somehow don't know why good camera sometimes doesn't come and stay for good, so sad :(

anglim, thanks for the explanation.

hey guys...

i try to go through this thread...but cannot really find any info on it.. or this thread it way too deep! :D

My question is simple.... I want to be able to take more shots with the battery. I wonder if there is a bigger capacity battery for this camera.

plaza Singapura #04-09/12

Mmmm, so Audio House sale is the cheapest place right now?

Is there any other place where there is still stock besides Audio House?
