Wow, these are OOC JPEGs? Damn, I can't imagine how good the RAWs are going to be!

Yes, all OOC JPEGs. Most of the night shots were taken at ISO 3200 as it was very dim (I have just included the EXIF data)

Hi would like to ask HN, is it a particular shop? As according to some dealers that i have checked with today its still slated to be out next week on the 28th

those shots at f/2.8 (at the lens sweet spot) really shows what this camera is capable of. Only drawback though: There just isnt enough depth of field control with a 2.8 aperture at 23mm with an APS-C sensor. The sharpness, contrast and colour are fabulous at apertures 2.8 or smaller but drops significantly at f/2.0.

I really wish they had put in a lens capable for f/1.4 and usably sharp from around f/1.8. Or put in a 30mm lens instead. Or put in a full frame sensor haha. Then at least still got chance to narrow depth of field enough to differentiate it from high quality point and shoots when it comes to subject isolation. I would happily pay the difference in cost

Yes I agree.
I wish the lens on the X100 could perform as well as the Leica D-Summilux 25mm f/1.4 wide open like in this pic... :(

This camera is extremely attractive but I think I'll hold on to my temptations and see what the other manufacturers will come out with in the next few months; at least till late May when I will have to buy a new camera.

A few more X100 handheld night shots from Chengdu:

ISO 2500, F4, 1/30s

ISO 3200, F2.8, 1/26s

ChengduC5.jpg

ISO 3200, F2.8, 1/30s

ISO 3200, F2.8, 1/17s

Last series of X100 shots from Chengdu:

I am beginning to think that it is the photographer that makes the photos seem WOW. and not just this good camera.

If you are willing to pay the difference, there is such a camera: Leica M9 with a 35mm Summilux :)

tomcat> i was wondering how come there seemed to be so much depth of field for f/1.4 at that kind of distance, so i took a look at the exif data...then realised it was shot on a small sensor olympus haha...but that is one heck of a sharp cat shot. Fantastic lens

thick> Leica M9s are sure tasty. BUT for that kind of money i expect perfection, and the M9 does fall short of perfection in terms of high ISO noise, white balance, and lack of AF

My dream camera would be something like the Fuji with a f/1.2, 35mm - 50mm prime, sharp, colourful and contrasty wide open with a full frame sensor and hyper-accurate AF. If it had an interchangable lens system and took Leica mounts, i'd start buying 4D tickets to afford it :)

The 4/3 sensor is not exactly small compared to that of a P&S camera. It has been shown before that the DOF of a lens on a 4/3 camera at an aperture of f at a particular focal length is about the same as that of a lens with the same focal length on a full-frame camera at an aperture of 2f if shot at different distance so as to keep the view (subject size) the same in both images. The DOF of the Leica D-Summilux 25mm at f/1.4 is therefore about the same as the DOF of a 25mm full frame lens at about f/2.8.

The APS-C sensor of the X100 is larger than the 4/3 sensor but still smaller than a full frame sensor. At an aperture of f/2.0, the DOF of the image the X100 produces would probably be equivalent to that produced by a similar focal length full frame lens at an aperture of around f/3.2.

It's probably too much to wish that the X100 has a lens that could match the Leica D-Summilux anyway. :(

That's why in the light of how much the alternative costs, X100 is pretty much PERFECT to me for the money I paid. That said, thank goodness it's 35mm, which is what I shoot. I'm sure I'll be all pissed if it was 50mm or longer.
