Talk about fair comparison, it is indeed very tricky since in my opinion, there is no suitable comparison for the X100 at this moment in time. Perhaps, the cameras that come closest to X100 will be the Leica X1 and the Sigma DP-2.
Indeed this camera is not for everyone and instead it is targeted towards a very small group of users who wants the following:
1) Quick adjustments to important exposure parameters
2) Vintage rangefinder feel
3) First of its kind hybrid optical viewfinder
4) Fast autofocusing (relative to comparable cameras, and the closest I can think of is the Leica X1)
5) Ability to provide decent image quality + bokeh without the bulk
6) All of these packed in the convenience of a digital compact body
If you look at how much those comparable cameras are selling when they are launched, you will notice that the X100 is indeed a bargain even at its RRP. The high demand of this camera tells no lie and it reflects the sentiments of the market. There will definitely be people who can't see beyond why this camera cost so much, and in fact, I would wager a bet that there are more people who couldn't understand what is so fantastic about this camera than those who truly do (thankfully!). I would say that Fuji has hit all the right notes this time round with the introduction of the X100 and I'm certain that this will only be a good thing for us as consumers since it will almost certainly open up a new segment in the market for such cameras.
