Fuji X100

Actually, I won't be complaining much if people who bought the X100 start selling them in a few months at a decent price after finding out that this isn't as friendly as a point-and-shoot. :)

But yeah, people in the market for a pns shouldn't be looking at this camera. The X100 works best in the hands of people who know how to shoot in manual and get creative with exposure.

Talk about fair comparison, it is indeed very tricky since in my opinion, there is no suitable comparison for the X100 at this moment in time. Perhaps, the cameras that come closest to X100 will be the Leica X1 and the Sigma DP-2.

Indeed this camera is not for everyone and instead it is targeted towards a very small group of users who wants the following:

1) Quick adjustments to important exposure parameters
2) Vintage rangefinder feel
3) First of its kind hybrid optical viewfinder
4) Fast autofocusing (relative to comparable cameras, and the closest I can think of is the Leica X1)
5) Ability to provide decent image quality + bokeh without the bulk
6) All of these packed in the convenience of a digital compact body

If you look at how much those comparable cameras are selling when they are launched, you will notice that the X100 is indeed a bargain even at its RRP. The high demand of this camera tells no lie and it reflects the sentiments of the market. There will definitely be people who can't see beyond why this camera cost so much, and in fact, I would wager a bet that there are more people who couldn't understand what is so fantastic about this camera than those who truly do (thankfully!). I would say that Fuji has hit all the right notes this time round with the introduction of the X100 and I'm certain that this will only be a good thing for us as consumers since it will almost certainly open up a new segment in the market for such cameras. :)

Fujifilm reports that its Taiwa-Cho factory, which is located 20 miles from Sendai, was damaged by the quake, but fortunately none of the workers were reported injured. Production of the FinePix X100, which was being done at that factory, has been temporarily stopped and delays can be expected for this highly-anticipated camera. The company says the rest of its operation is not affected.

word. people who don't use manual controls WILL be disappointed in this camera. I think alot of people do not understand what the camera really is about - handling for the manual user. Most people just want the 'retro' wannabe rangefinder look.

Actually, I do not agree with this. I am using the X100 in aperture priority mode most of the time and I'm very happy with the way it is. Granted that this camera offers full manual capability, it does not mean those who don't use manual controls will be disappointed. There are a lot more than just manual controls being offered by this camera and one should not judge it based on this criteria alone. :)

how come nobody compared it with the samsung NX10?

Also APSC sensor. also f/2 lens (30mm) so probably thinner DOF. Manual controls.

I think NEX5 is very different from X100...

While some here might think that they are already getting a bargain even if they had bought the X100 at the RRP of $1699, it is nevertheless a fact that the X100 is really still heavily marked up in Singapore. It is actually selling at less than $1300 in neighboring Thailand. Taking this into perspective, when there are people here who are willing to pay hundreds above the RRP for a used X100 (hopefully they know how to use it properly), it is excusable for others to feel that the whole situation is bordering on hysteria, desperation and misplaced hype.

I for one am going to give Fuji Singapore a chance to bring the X100 in by next month to earn my loyalty and hard earned cash, albeit at heavily discounted street prices, failing which I will ask my friend to get one for me at even greater savings from Bangkok when he goes there next month. Either way, it's a win-win for me and the X100.;)

There is the basic principle of supply and demand at work, which means people who perceive high value for ownership right now will pay more, up to the value they think is appropriate for what they want. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. And a person who is willing to pay $2000 for it now is no different than say, a person who only wants a glorified pns who will pay the street price of $1600 and use the camera exclusively on A&A (aperture and shutter speed) mode (hence why wouldn't an LX5/XZ1 not satisfy the same function for less money).

Let's keep our judgements of what people want to do with their money to ourselves.

Should actually compare with NX11 in that case. The NX11 has better AF and low noise performance than the NX10 and even the NX100. It also has a sweep panorama mode and costs less than $800 with an improved 18-55mm kit lens with iFn. Very tempted to get one to play-play actually especially when there are some really superb NX lenses coming out this year like the 85mm f/1.4, 16mm f/2.4 pancake and 60mm f/2.8 macro.

Just checked out the NX10 - it's pretty big. Not as compact as the X100 :(

did you check it with the Pancake 30mm? The X100 is 12mm shorter but 5mm wider. As for thickness, the NX10 is probably a couple of MM thicker.

NX10 is very nice to hold actually.

The NX10 is a monster compared to say the Samsung NX100, the Panasonic GF1/2, or any of the PENs or even the NEX. A more appropriate comparison would have been the Panasonic G2/GH2.

while waiting for the filter adapter availability, here's a cheaper way to protect the lens

Hi Flip,

Just want to double confirm if the lens has any issue extending while focusing using the step up convertor?

Just took a handheld night shot of the very dim Bishan Park at ISO 12,800 (F2, 1/15s). No PP, just some slight adjustment in levels.

Nope, plenty of clearance. Also, there's no vignetting issues.
