Fuji X100 - Part 2

filter not an absolute necessity, but I prefer to hv one on to protect the lens, choose a good one should u decide to use filter, I use b+w xs-pro nano, it's easy to clean, so far no complaint. :)

Does you b+w suffer from any reflective blobs when shooting into bright lights? My Hoya has these alien green blobs whenever I shoot at night into bright lights. Just wondering if it's the filter.

Easy to test. Using same setting, mount the camera on tripod and shoot with and without filter

Its the filter. Get the new B+W. The old B+W has slight reflection too, when shoot into bright light at certain angle.

So the new B+W ones doesn't have those reflection when taken under bright light? How much does the B+W filter cost?
I'm afraid that filter will degrade the final image colour etc.

Tested before. It's definitely the filter causing the blobs from reflections when shooting directly into bright light.

Was just wondering if it was due to the Hoya filter I'm using and whether the B+W is better...... Hmm.... may need to try the B+W. How can I tell if it's new? Got a model number?

The B+W XSPro have a extra nano coating .. compared to the normal MRC coating .. Is that considered the new B+W filter? I quite like those, mainly because its slimmer and easy to clean (due to the nano coating).

if one wants to get filter, I strongly recommend this filter. it turns the lens to nano coated lens. check out Nikon, any lense with nano coated comes at least SGD2k+

nope.... so far so good..... maybe because I had a hood on too all the time when I shoot
Also, I dont shoot into direct sunlight.... I look for shadow and contrast.....

The blobs aren't caused by flare which could be solved with a hood. I think it's more to do with the filter itself.

This is an example of what I'm talking about.

Taking something like a birthday cake in a dark room will also cause blobs to appear from the reflections of the candles.

Removing the filter solves this problem but its a bit of a pain to remove it each time you shoot in such situations.

Am not sure if its the Hoya filter that's causing these issues or its just because a filter is used... Don't want to fork out for a b+w and find out that it has the same problem.

i believe it is due to camera design, where the lens is too close to the sensor. neither on/off filter would solve the issue.

Yep, I don't use a filter but still have the same flare problem. Apparently the closeness causes reflections to bounce back and forth between the sensor and back element.

I just upgraded to v1.20. Now I can't turn on the grid lines for some reason. >.< But on the bright side I can now use my Fn button to control ISO and my RAW button to switch on/off the ND filter. v1.20 also allows you to control auto-ISO from the ISO menu instead of from the setup menu.

Are there any difference between v1.20 and v1.21?

Extracted from FUJI website:

By updating the firmware from ver 1.13 or former into ver. 1.20, the following phenomena have been found.
To remove these phenomena, please update into new firmware ver 1.21 and these phenomena must be removed.

The firmware update Ver.1.21 form ver1.20 incorporates the following issues:

When checking focus point by pushing AE-L/AF-L button in MF mode, following phenomena can be observed in relation to focus area settings.

These phenomena are improved.
1.When the focus area is set to bottom right end position, the camera may hang up.
2.Even when the focus area is set to other area than above, focus may be hard to be established.

i believe it is due to camera design, where the lens is too close to the sensor. neither on/off filter would solve the issue.

In my case if the filter is removed I don't have the issue with blobs.... Need to experiment more without the filter to reconfirm....

FYI, i dun use any filter at all. fujinon glass is da best. I dun want to put another layer of plastic/glass in front of the lens to degrade quality..

anyone using sandisk extreme pro 95mbs ? any experience to share ?

Agreed but I use the filter as protection... don't use a lens cap.

Have been using for the past few weeks. Previously using the extreme pro 45mbs. Definitely faster...... But not thaaaat much faster.

Since u say fuji glass is the best, how abt using their original filter? Haha.

fujinon glass da best, but not fuji filter. when a lens is designed, i trust the engineer had placed the optimal no. of glass and element to make up a good lens. filter is like "drawing snake with foot" it would serve as a protection, true. but then i believe it would degrade the optical quality, may be 1% ~ 3%. when i have the equipment, i use it to fullness.

takut it get dirty and protect it with another layer and downgrade the ability, is not my philosophy.

do i ever user filter ? yes, CPL i like most.
