Fuji X10, so pretty!

Was initially attracted to the Marumi filter but persevered and managed to find this:

B+W 40mm MRC UV filter

The MRC coating is something I had always been sold on...

Do note the seller does not ship outside of Japan and stocks are limited.

hello :)

- will users of X10 find it awkward when handling the lens portion of it? i believe guys' hands are kinda big, how do u feel when u need to turn the lens (like how you handle a dslr)?
- do users of X10 find any blooming issues with your photos? saw the article from dpreview and wonder if the issue is that bad as mentioned in the article...

Thanks!

yes, the blooming problem does recur, esp when taking night exposure shots with specular lights.

just came back from a Europe trip using 70% my x10 & 30% dslr.... i set to raw + JPEG mode, n would say that thr JPEG out of the camera is very nice, after attempting to post process the 100+ RAF (Out of the few k shots) in CS5, i find using the JPEG files str8 to be far faster and convenient instead.

the handing part is not a prob, just need some getting used when zoom in and out the lens, esp for me i will still use OVF to a certain extend.

As mention by user12343, the blooming issue does happen and i do experience it during long exposure shoot. But from what i know, Fujifilm is working on a new firmware to correct this issue, hopefully will be out soon. (and i agree the JEPG file image is pretty good :) )

Wait till you try out the Advanced - portrait mode, really nice portraits with good bokeh.

not forgetting the pro low light mode that is a lifesaver during difficult lightings that would've rendered a troublesome noisy raw file to work with. :)

Haven't tried that yet...post some pics, let us see...

We should make an x10 pictures thread. dont let x100 guys have all the fun :P

seems like despite the blooming thingy, X10 users are enjoying the camera nevertheless :)

actually i created an X10 pictures thread a few weeks ago... but response not too great (plus i haven gotten mine :P ), so i guess it is being removed, lol.

I guess a lot of users haven't gotten their X10 yet to be able to shoot decent shots with it. There should be more users now, so creating a new thread for that would be fine.

Latest update from 2filter on Marumi filter (and they raised the price). Nevertheless, I've proceeded to order 5 pieces as originally planned. Still no advise as to shipping cost.

Hi Robin,

I just received pricing for the multicoated filters in this size:

Marumi 40mm Multicoated Clear Filter - $26.62
Marumi 40mm Multicoated Circular Polarizer - $46.49

These filters are mounted in a black ring, but are not in the slim mount. It is also only a standard Mutlicoat not the Super DHG coating.

Thank you,

Andrea

Yes it does up to 85mm. But with 40.5 (or 40mm) filter, only up to 50mm and even at 28mm much less. So I'm considering reverting back to 40mm filters once I get my Marumi 40mm filter. I ordered some .. waiting for it to arrive. For the time being, I've reverted to my cheapo Vitacon filter (which I got from Alan photo). But seem to be hardly any coating goes in about half round. I did try a 40.5 mm B+W filter but goes in less than quarter of a round. So the Vitacon fits a bit better, but far from perfect. Hopefully the Marumi can go in all the way and has decent coating and is black (note that Japan Exposures is selling a 40mm Marumi now, but its silver - see this link japan exposures | films and more (formerly Megaperls Japan Webshop))

See email from 2filter
Thank you for inquiring about the 40mm UV/Clear and Circular Polarizer filter by Marumi. Hi Robin,

I have been able to confirm that it is a Clear, Multi-coated filter in a black mount. At this time, I do not know if the mount is a slim mount. I finally have pricing and would like to thank you for your patience; it looks like these will finally be available in the next 2-3 weeks.

The price on these filters is as follows:

Marumi 40mm Clear Protective filter - US$17.80

Marumi 40mm Circular Polarizer filter - US$38.25

Having played with the Fujifilm X10 for the past few days, here is my short review:

Pros:

1. Nice retro design and top notch Japan built quality (best in class).

2. Bright 28mm to 112mm zoom lens with big aperture at F2.0 (28mm) to F2.8 (112mm). Good for low light shooting without flash.

3. The mechanical zoom lens barrel is smooth and feel like a mini DSLR (much better than the electrical zoom lens in most compact cams)

4. Good image quality for a small sensor compact camera.

5. Nice Fuji colour and accurate skin tone. Velvia film simulation is great for landscape shots.

6. Good low light capability (not as good as the X100 as the X100 is using a larger APS-C sensor but is much more expensive)

7. EXR mode is useful for point & shoot (especially for beginners, just set it to EXR mode and turn on the face detection).

Cons:

1. The optical viewfinder is not as good as the X100 (no focus light indicator and only 85% coverage). But the quality is much better than other compact cams such as the Canon G12.

2. Battery life is not as good. Need to get a spare battery (SLR Revolution is selling a 3rd party one for only $7).

Verdict:

The X10 is one of the best compact cams I have used to date. No regret buying it. 4.5/5

DSCF0043.jpg

Handheld night shot at ISO 800, F2, 1/10s. Not as clean as the X100 but pretty impressive for a small sensor compact cam

DSCF0479.jpg

The Super Macro mode is nice. Shot in ISO 800, F2, 1/30s.

i bought another original battery during my recent trip. RAW+JPEG, LCD one notch below default, 2min poweroff. captured average daily about 190+ shots (some with flash, some EXR, some Pano/Low-light mode), turn on/off when necessary, and battery is still full tank at end of the day. so essentially the spare battery is never used on the same day the current battery is discharging.

the only time the battery drains fast is when shooting full hd video, with the compartment area getting a bit warm.

I checked the site Edwin mention abt the B+W 40mm UV filter and email them, but was told no stocks and still waiting for their reply when new stocks arrive... So the Marumi 40mm filter is the best option for those keen on the 40mm filter now :)

just wonder, with this 40mm filter on, will the orginal x10 lens cap still able to fit in?

I also wrote to Marumi Japan to see whether they actually had 40mm in DHG and slim mount. They say don't have .. see below. I guess Marumi standard MC type is like standard B+W F-Pro (non slim), while Marumi DHG and slim mount is like B+W Nano with XSPro mount. The slim mounts are 3mm, while the standard mounts are 5mm. Both Marumi DHG and B+W Nano coating boast easier cleaning. So for the time being, we have to settle for Marumi standard mount and standard multi coating. Good enough.

Also they say Singapore agent for Marumi is JEL Corporation, which is actually the company that bring in Tamron. So next stop is to bug Tamron Singapore.

Dear Mr. Robin CHEE,

Thank you for your e-mail, but we haven't produced 40mm size of DHG Type and Slim Type.

Do you live in Singapore? Our agent in Singapore is JEL Corporation,
so please ask them for further inquiry.

best regards,

Filter with the original x10 cap, well the diameter is no problem, because its smaller the body of the lens diameter. But depth is a problem. Without any lens filter there is just enough depth to sit properly. With any kind of filter there is less depth and can't sit fully. I rather forget about the original lens cap and just use a cheapo $7 no brand clip on filter cap. You can get it from any camera shop. The 40.5mm filter cap should fit either 40.5mm or 40mm filters.

One comment tho, white balance is really off for indoor shots.

This is their reason for changing the price. Reasonable I guess.

Hi Robin,

The original pricing that I provided to you is for the Non-coated version of these filters. I did not find out until after I quoted this price to you that it was not a multi-coated filter. The new pricing is for the multi-coated version.

Thank you,
