Fuji X10, so pretty!

Using class 10 sandisk 16gb and with quick start turned in.

It doesn't come on immediately for me. The little orange light will flash maybe 5 to 10 times, about 3-5s, before the LCD actually shows the liveview, then it maybe another 1-2s before it can shoot.

What about photo review when camera is switches off? I press the (green) playback button and a green n black cube graphic will come on, then it's another 2-3s before I can see a pic.

Hope it's not a lemon...

That is very abnormal. I do not even have quick startup turned on and it it ready to shoot immediately.

In all likely hood, I will end up using the Maurimi filter. Cos the still on filter means I have to use back the original lens cap, which is not comfortable in my pocket. The Maurimi filter can use standard clip on filters which are cheap and thin and easily fit into my pocket.

I guess I am going to go the other way. Keeping it simple. Fuji obviously designed a beautiful camera, and even the cap's part of the equation. Originally intended to use possibly square filters with it, or Circular polariser, etc ... but for all the hassle, I may as well use my other cameras which are equipped to do that.

Good thing is with this lens cap, I had lots of prior "training" from using the Pentax Limited lenses (which all come with such lens caps).

So who's ordering this stick-on filter?!

after look at all the review, posts, photos in the other thread etc, make me want to get this camera instead of the Canon S100. One thing that hold me back till now is the higher price n the size (not that compact compare to Canon S-series).

Just timed mine. From time from off to one position to be able to see live view .. Less than 1 second.
From off to view pictures (without turning on) just holding the play button .. Less than 1 second.

Try formatting your card. See what happens. Also I don't have RAW switched on and my settings are are M resolution, but Fine settings. With Quickstart on

Thanks for all the various input.

I think I may have just solved the problem.

I'm still on a trip but I had brought along an extra class 10 16gb card. Both were formatted on the x10. I had quick start set to "on" and had been having the slow startup problems as described earlier.

Yesterday, I popped in the 2nd card just to try and the startup became immediate. Was ok the entire day, until....

I put the card in the iPad connection kit and downloaded photos. After I put the card back into the x10, same slow startup problems resurfaced!

I think the iPad 'tags' the card or photos somehow and the x10 on startup may have needed to verify the card.

I'll wait till I get back to Spore to run more 'tests'.

What I do to prevent this is to write protect (lock) the SD card before putting it into any iPad, PC or Mac for reading/copying out the files. After reading/copying, just unlock the card before putting it back into the X10. Or you have to reformat it each time you put the card back inside.

Hmm...it's never happened before with any of my other cams, whether it's SD or CF cards. It's also never happened before with any device too, whether it's iPad or Mac.

i read from dpreview that we have to reformat the card for smooth operation in camera after downloading the photos to our computer :( can the bug be fixed in the next firmware?

got my X10 today

Love the design, the feel, the fast lens, the color (especially from Velvia).. high ISO is a bit let down though...

here are some test shots (no post processed just used Paint to resize):

I bought the X10 today from SLR Revolution at $802! Comes with a screen protector and camera case. Should I pay $100 for Fujifilm's extended warranty (additional 2 years)? Any advice?

My silver one from Japan Exposure on its way to Singapore (only ordered one as I did not like the silver). Arriving 7-8 days time. Black ones from 2filter no shipping advise yet.

My silver Marumi arrived today. It fits perfectly and screws in all the way with no problem. Its about 3.5mm thick, so only slightly thicker than slim filters (which are 3mm). Unfortunately silver looks a bit strange on the black X10. No news yet of my 5 black Marumi 40mm filters. Guess its Christmas so no one is working (since its coming from USA). See photos below.

This shows that a 40.5mm Vitacon filter does not screw in all the way. Notice the big gap.

Oh yes, forgot to mention the SD card. It's a 16GB one.

Might be good to trade up to either a 45MB/S or 95MB/S Sandisk Extreme Pro card. I'm using the 95MB/S one.

I tried the Canon S100 at Courts. Nice metal feel and small, good for quality pocket camera. But totally different feel from the X10. With X10 its feels like a mini DSLR with great control and handling, especially the manual zoom. The S100 more like a toy camera.

Found I missed the instant flash popup of the X10, the S100 needed to use menus, which takes time. Also the color balance of S100 could not set in actual color temperature, only presets and custom. On the X10, I normally set the K settings to be around 2500, which works great for fast shifting to very yellow tungsten lights. And you can test with tungsten gel and preset those and can call back quickly.

On X10, I use quite often with EF20 with tungsten gels and balancing color (tungsten flash and background tungsten) is much easier with the actual K setting function in X10.

Also the auto iSO for S100 max out at 1600, though you can set higher ISO manually. Also while it seems that S100 got good low light capability, that's only at wide angle, cos once you zoom to telephone, aperture drops to F5.0, while the X10 drop only to F2.8, so X10 lens got 1.5 stops advantage at the longer end. Made quite a lot of difference.

In short, if you want a pocketable, small camera with good quality images, Canon S100 may work for you. If you want to have something with good feel and control, with good quality images, the X100 is better, although its not as pocketable. That don't mean I won't buy a S100 to stuff into my pocket. But the X10 will be first choice for me.

And its not fair to compare the price of X10 and S100. While both have small sensors, the X10 is really in a different class from S100 (built, fast zoom, control, made in japan etc)

In the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, I believe the X10 would have great number of better images.

great review. but I do find the x10's panorama sweep extremely useful in getting pano shots, which have wowed my frens during my recent tour... and the pro low light shots that does wonders even in pitch dark scenes... :D

No where on the box or filter itself does it indicated MC (multi coating). It only indicates UV. I've seen other photos of Marumi filters where it says UV-MC. But Marumi does have non coated filters. So I suspect this silver one from Japan Exposures is not MC. But those I ordering from 2filter in black are MC.

I've confirmed with Japan Exposures that the filter that they are selling is NOT multi coated, but just single coated. See reply below:

Dear Robin,

thank you for your enquiry.

The filter is single-coated and available in silver only. We have not heard of a MC black version, although that may change.

But I suggest you get from 2filters as they just have the black version. Though its not yet updated on their website. See my earlier posts on this topic.
