freewares for amateur photographers

i just downloaded 3 software for my already slow computer... how slow my computer is? i can type faster than the screen could disply.... -_-'''

Do feedback which are the software that are resource hogs. Though free but must have some standard also. Let me know so that I remove them from the list.

1) http://www.cinepaint.org/

2) http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/

This allows GIMP to open raw files. But whether using this with GIMP means 16 bit editing or not I am not sure.

there are others but i have not use them before, but i will just list them here:

http://www.koffice.org/krita/
http://seashore.sourceforge.net/
http://kornelix.squarespace.com/fotoxx/
http://f-spot.org/Features

I have included but later removed CinePaint as it only runs on Linux. I am not sure how many of CSers uses Linux for their photo editing.

I will leave out those that you have not used since you will not be able to know if they are reliable enough to be used.

i believe there is a portable version of photoscape

Do you know if the portable are scaled down versions or maintained the functionality of the desktop version?

Thanks to all those that contributed to the list. This thread has become a sticky. So that means it will have to be a continual process of keeping the software list updated. So please addon if there are software that you think should be on this list. And also feedback if there are any software that needs to be removed.

Can you use the below format to facilitate cut and paste.

-- G'MIC - http://gmic.sourceforge.net/gimp.shtml]G'MIC[/URL] as a GIMP's noise reduction plug-in

Are these good or simply because there is a portable version?
I personally use Portable Xnview, and Portable GIMP. I also use Portable Firefox & Portable Open Office (which are out of scope of this thread). No issues with them and just as good at the version installed on desktop computer. :)

the raw therapee always crash on my pc.hummm... i guess should just stick to the DPP.

really? will put a note next to the software. The next person who reports it will have the software removed from the list.

I cannot use DPP on my netbook as the netbook only has a 1024x600 resolution which is not supported by DPP. So these raw convertors are useful in this kind of situation.

Thank you for starting this thread. Wonderful, and I hope this is put into Sticky... Some evaluation from users will be great. These days, we are innundated with so many softwares. Great job!

I need everyone's help to keep the thread current as I do not check the links once I posted them. So if the links are invalid or outdated. Please update here so that I can update the original post. Everyone is involved in keeping the list current and updated.

i believe the portable version is essentially the same as the full version
i just got the link
http://photoscape-portable.en.softonic.com/
it is only 16.5mb.. and can run from thumbdrive, great for on-the-go..
just check it out! ;)

Linux users should just stick to GIMP: it is pre-compiled and bundled into just about every single desktop Linux distro available, along with UFRaw.

Not to mention that CinePaint is a very old fork of GIMP which has its own set of dependencies that may not be satisfied in every distro out there without acquiring some additional software libraries from the distro server.

And by the way, I use Linux. Fedora 10, to be precise. ;)

anybody know if there are freeware photo presentation software?
