Foveon X3 sensor user thread

Woah thats quite staggering, was thinking of this or a m4/3 setup. Guess I'll stick With the older version, may I know the difference between the x and s series? I guess the only cost effective option would be to go for the first model :(

here is my understanding of major Difference ;

  • The new M series is 15megapixel X 3 sensor. It is same sensor as SD1M
  • The lens no longer extend out when in operation, so the issue of faulty lens could not retract back when power off, might be gone.
  • Better LCD resolution, 3inch 920K
  • Slightly faster AF speed from user video on youtube
  • Processing speed due to Dual engine processing
  • DP1x is f4, DP1M is f2.8
  • DP2X is 40.5mm effective range, DP2M is 45mm

X100 sold like a hot cake at SGD1,400. let look at the spec,

  • X100 is 12mp, APC sensor. DP2M is 15mp APC sensor.
  • X100 is 35mm f2, DP2M is 45mm f2.8
  • None has IS
  • Fuji color is nice, Sigma has no AA filter
  • Both are no good at AF, battery consumption, processing, video and MF
  • X100 has classic look but heavy, DP2M boring but compact

X100 and DP1/2M are quite in the same league...

Hi folks, sorry to dig up an old thread but I am very intrigued by the feveon's output, anywhere I can get the dp Merrill version locally?

ActuAlly its not old thread its just slow :p.

As mention dp merrill version not out world wide yet. And 1 k to 1.3 k sounds like a possible price.

Past models sells about 699 usd at amazon. Sld be around there i guess.

Mmmm... Guess Its share similar plus and minus points. But the sensor does makes Sigma camera very different.

Its relly depends on what do you want for a camera. DP1 is a high image quality producing camera that live in the old digital world. While m4/3 have lots of goodness of a present day digital camera.

To me the main plus point of DP1/2 vs m4/3 is sensor. But user experiences wise, m4/3 seems better.

I'm mainly a film user(have no digital camera as of now)

So was thinking of getting a compact for my non serious and everyday stuff, I have made up my mind with the dp2x and they announced the m ver. Using the same sensor as the SD1 is a big plus point. And its a big step ahead of the older models.

problem for a poly student like me is digital equipment is so expensive, by the time I saved enough cash a new one is announced lols.

My heart is mainly set on the dp m ver, only problem now is my wallet and deciding the focal lengh(dp1 or 2)

Have u use or handle a dp1/2 before? Sld try to play with one to see if it suits u. :)

DP1/2 lover stand by it and get used to the slow. Just like the x100 user.

Do check out amazon regularly. I got my dp1s from there due to a sudden promo.

I have handled a dp1 loaned from a fellow forumer here, really liking the fact that its a compact with a big sensor, now just need to learn how to edit raw, never done any photoshop of any nature,

to max the best X3 IQ from DP, only use SPP. u can go to sigmaphoto.com to download a free copy.

serious speaking, DP series is the most unuser friendly. the operation is indeed very frustrating.
could not focus, slow operation, very bad battery consumption...but once u see the pic , you would forgive all the negative.

Totally agree. But user-unfriendliness only lasts for a certain period when the user is new. My main gripe is this camera is helpless at night. I can still live with the other issues because there are ways of overcoming them. In fact the more I look at the images it produces and the really great RAW software, SPP, coupled with Photoshop, the more I am convinced I do not need my Panasonic GX1. LOL!!!

Please contribute images taken with your Sigma cameras featuring Foveon sensors.

Thank you ManWearPants for highlighting this foveon post. Indeed a pleasant surprise.
Hopefully we get to see more pics. Seems dormant for a while.
babykailan are you listening.
Hopefully the flow will return.
Something from our zoo.
