There are many instances where one also have to give a copy of their passport, like renting a car........kahheng said:I'd actually feel rather unsafe giving out my passport no. in case of identity theft.

Or give them a (low res) scan of your ID lah! They just need to confirm the name.........and for Clubsnap it should be ok I think.....kahheng said:But I will not want to give it up on the internet. Who knows what kind of people the people who run that website are.

I wish it was only for that, I was thinking to prevent trolls and people coming in with multiple nicks, and harassing others.......there were some instances recently. I don't know how to monitor these, IP addresses is a way, but then one will get problems logging in from work, or from overseas.destiny_star said:but wat's ur ratinonale of doing so?? juz to stop all the nonsense attack?? it's abit overkill dun u think so??
Depends how you see it. I believe the server problem is easily solved (basically a money problem), but people's behaviour like trolls and multiple nicks and then harrassing others is serious enough as it can also bring Clubsnap into problems. Hacking here is not a big problem, as as far as I know it hasn't occurred that many times here.......goering said:That is NOT a good idea - privacy issues, too much admin work on the part of CS all just to "stop all those nonsense attacking". Moreover, fake passport info could still be easily sent - and that is even worse because then you get a false sense of security
It is much quicker and effortless for the admins to close/lock the threads that have gone astray. I think CS has other more important issues to grapple with - such as upgrading its servers as indicated by its recent appeal for funds
Keep it simple - CS is not a commercial entity
dumbest idea. there are many photo related website and forum out there. Absolutely no way am I going to give them my password information, let alone giving them a copy.hongsien said:Fotografer.net requires every member to send passport info, could this be something for Clubsnap? Don't be so paranoid lah! A low res copy can't make a nice passport!..........the main cause of fake identities is because real passports get stolen! And fakes ones these people can make themselves, they don't need your copy.......Deadpoet said:dumbest idea. there are many photo related website and forum out there. shinken said:1) There aren't hackers now, because hackers have no reaons (yet) to take an interest in hacking. But with the admin holding the IDs, there's one (additional reason) to bait hackers.
2) IDs can be faked, especially when sent through the internet. Low-res or high-res. Scan, PS-superimpose, send. False sense of security, I parrot.
3) CS-Admin has to bear the responsibilities of requiring IDs in the event of security and privacy breached that can be traced back to CS. As mentioned, this level of risk, for what purpose?
4) Trolls, nuisance posters, multiple IDs are reflections of socio-psychological behaviours of a community. There's no quick fix. It would be presumptious to assume any quick fix to be a solution. It only invites these trolls, nuisance posters, multiple IDs to try to beat the system.
5) Again, do we have such a serious problem here that warrants taking a risk?
That shouldn't be a problem in SG? Almost everyone I think gets a free email address from their ISP company, isn't it?kahheng said:You make good points.
Actually I feel that one of the ways to cut down on trolls, multiple ids, etc, is to disallow registration with non ISP email addresses. FredMiranda does this. So not Hotmail, Gmail, Mailinator, etc addresses. For sure, it will upset some legitimate users of these email services but it will force much more accountability.

as many had said it also, it's the information that is what hackers want. identify theft is a big problem around the world. It took me 18 months to straighten everything out after someone use part of my ID to apply for credit cards etc.hongsien said:Don't be so paranoid lah!
