I face the exact problem as u when using my Tamron 18-270!! It makes me looks stupid when ppl ask me to take a shot and I had to reboot the camera. Found any good solution?
Sell the Tammy and get the 18-200VR. An experience with a Sigma prime puts me off 3rd party lenses.

So many people have this problem :o

Like that must take note, never know got such a problem with this Nikon + Tamron combination.

no solution found yet...it usually occurs when im low on batt. so far can life with it...

low on batt?
get a batt grip and put in 2 batts :)

Same problem here with 18-270 and D90 ...and it happens frequently:
-when focal lenght is above 200mm (but also at other focal lenghts)
-when I'm focusing very close objects (50cm)
-trying to focus in dim light.

Sometimes I fix the problem going to MF and back to AF or switching D90 off and ON, but many times this is not sufficient and I have to unlock the lens and lock it back. At this poit the D90 recognizes it correctly...until the next failure.

Are there any other solutions to fix the problem or the only solution is to send it to Tamron...waiting about 2 months?

Have contact points to be cleaned/realigned?

If you look at the AF specs for Nikon bodies, it's specified that the maximum aperture should be at least f/5.6. The Tamron at 270mm is f/6.3. That's already pushing the limits, so AF will be slow and tend to hunt.

Again, the electronic problem is because the 3rd party lens makers do not have access to Nikon's proprietary communication protocol between the lens and the body (it applies to 3rd party flash also...), so they have to reverse engineer (probably with a data analyzer) to see what goes on between the lens and the body. They may get it right to a certain extent but there will always something they miss out because they do have the actual protocol information.

I bet to avoid such inconvience...better get the manufacturer's lenses...though a little more pricey...

That's what I do after having experience with some 3rd party lenses. They may work now but may not work with future bodies. You can't keep bringing them back to the service centre.

I happened to get the freezing problem on my D90 + 18-105mm VR

Camera is 10mths old. And when using a kingston 8GB class 4 SD card, I can only shoot till left 90+ shots.

same thing happens to my D90 using tamron 28-75mm...
no focus, hanged...need to on n off few times b4 its back to norm..

I tried a few times with my Tamron 90mm but never face problem but i did face problem with Nikor 50mm f1.8 lens.
While my camera was trying to focus it was making strange noise from motor but lens was not able to focus :dunno:.

I have the same problem with D90 + 18-105mm VR. It can be frustrating at times especially when you need to take a shot. Sometimes it resolve itself when zoom and unzoom or switch off and on. Sometimes it doesn't and it takes like forever to recover. :dunno:

+1, my lens was not giving problem every time but some time when taking picture of my 8 months old, it was frustrating so i returned that lens ;).

Im new with DSLR. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't manual better that auto? I mean what's the point of using a DSLR if you set everything to auto?

i'm noob no DSLR only prosumer PnS but i'm pretty sure most of the time people are not gonna be shooting in FULL manual mode (set aperture, set shutter, set ev, set ISO and manual focus all together for every shot) that's why we have all this technology and advancements in the DLSR bodies...

we'll be using either Av(aperture priority) mode or Tv (shutter priority) mode (which are in fact semi auto modes) or even program mode most of time, and i think unless doing macro or narrow DOF shots, or specific requirements, we'll be depending on the AF technology that these DSLRs can offer.

this is just my take. the pros may beg to differ
