So I presume they use the felt to Dampen the focus ring ?
Shame its not like old school AI-S / or Zeiss ZF/ZF.2 lenses that rely on oils and precision metal alloy machining to offer the resistance I believe? ( can only dream... )

Just a trade off I guess. These modern lenses has to be light and fast. And with stiff competition, manufacturers have to save cost in parts.
What's important is to know the symptoms of a loose felt from the focusing ring.
Once the felt got stuck in the SWM mechanism, the circuitry that drives the motor could be fried if the owner still continue to use the lens
