First DSLR

errr.. i decided to buy 1100D coz I thought canon would have good entry level camera...:embrass: .. so which brand is actually recommended for entry level??

hmm, yeah somebody did mention pentax to me, but just that I never heard of the brand.. Is sony userfriendly? Never liked their point-and-shoot so didn't really check on their DSLRs..

Pentax Kr is one of the best buy entry level cameras. It has features and performance that is not that of an entry level camera ;)
You can compare photos taken by Kr, 1100D, D3100 here and see for yourself.

BTW, Pentax was the first Japanese SLR maker with many firsts to its name.

competition at the entry level is so intense that pricing and specification are more or less similar.

maybe with Nikon and Canon. But Pentax and Sony have quite good differentiators.

So what's the price for Kr, 1100D, D3100 ? And where can i get cheap DSLRs ?

among the 3 i will advise you to skip 1100D & D3100 (both are mere entry level).

SLR-R is a good place for Pentax K-r (upper entry level + small features + more all rounder compared to the other 2 above), you can get a quote for the other 2 models from them as well

Nikon & Canon you might want to try MS Color, or search for the list of reputable shops.

Pentax K-r is pretty good, so is the Sony A33

I tot Sony already stopped making a33 due to sensor over heating issues..

excuse me? what a half-assed assumption there. just because a product is discontinued doesn't mean it's bad.

it's just like the 30D etc. they stopped making it because it turned into a frog eating contraption.

zzzzz

What is a reasonable first DSLR to get ? My budget is below 1000, or maybe a lil' above that :/

well, buy from the 2nd hand market and play with it for a while first, during this period, you can then decide whether you really want a DSLR or not.

A lot of people buy already and just throw inside the dry cabinet.

Nope. The A33 was not selling because the A55 was stealing all the demand. Sony has improved the A33 and is releasing it as A35.

However, there are still lots of A33 cameras in the market, readily available. Inthe buy and sell there are many unopened sets due to a standard chartered giveaway!

Blindsoulz, look at the A33 as well - fast autofocus in live view mode, fast autofocus in video and also has built-in anti-shake and an LCD you can completely flip forward for taking shots of yourself. Cheap too!

Hi TS,

I believe that this is a topic asked generally. As Akatsuki mentioned, it is a system that you are buying into. So the cost of switching to another system can be quite painful to your wallet if you decide to switch later on.

Perhaps before all the brand comparisons come to mind, you might like to go to a camera store to play with a particular system eg Canon. If the camera doesn't feel natural in your hand, then no matter how good it is, I might think you might not want to buy it.

Check out those within your budget. You may wish to consider getting a second hand camera as the others before have recommended. That way, your budget might be able to cover the cost of other accessories or lenses. It doesn't mean that you need to start off with a cutting edge camera to enjoy the hobby. A 40D/50D/D90 may also be well worth it since you are still exploring.

I personally made the error of listening to a friend which camera was better instead of learning and making a more informed decision. I could have bought a cheaper body and a better lens previously. You may decide that you want to buy a canon but may end up buying a Nikon/ Sony/Olympus because it suits your needs and budget more.

Alright then, i'll look forward for a Pentax. Thanks guys !

Don't start a brand war lol! Any entry-level camera's good to start with. What's most important is the learning, before deciding to invest heavily in future mid or higher end bodies of the same brand or another brand ;)

Actually, it all depends on you, your time and your passion in photography. Not because of the camera being on an entry level or mid level classification.

A dslr is actually easy to use provided that you want to take the time to learn the functions. Its your dedication to your dslr in the end and your creativity.

Dont be too bothered on what to buy. If you ask me, get a nikon d90. Because thats what im using. And its my first dlsr mind you haha.

Get what you want, so you wont regret in the end :)

I got so used to DSLR until when some one pass me a PnS to help, I was stunned over the controls for a few seconds thinking how to use it. Oh yes, point and shoot......
