Wow! 500D on the 100-400, how far away will one need to stand? Any sample pics?

This photo was taken with EF 100-400mm with 500D filter attached.

f16 and 1/45 at ISO 200, tripod mounted.

MFD is reduced to 0.5m when you used the 500D filter on this lens.

I can show you the power of Canon 500D filter. :bigeyes: without a true Macro lens.

Anyone has the 70-200mm f2.8L or 300mm f4L to bring along? The 500D filter thread size is 77mm, so need either of these lenses.

Canon have 2 type of close up filter right?? Both for 58mm, and between 250 and 500, which is more power (more close up), and the estimated cost???

Yes, there are 2 new types of Close-up filters by Canon - 250D and 500D (both with double elements). You can choose the 500 version (single element) if you are on budget.

In fact, Canon has 2 other discountinued filters which are the 240 and 450. (Just for info only)

The name of the filter indicates its maximum working distance in mm. Therefore, a 250D is much stronger than a 500D, for instance. The 250D is used with lens focal lengths from 28mm-135mm whereas 500D is typically used with lenses from about 75mm-300mm.

Note :
Working distance = distance between front of lens and subject
Focusing distance = distance between the focal plane and the subject
250D comes with 52mm and 58mm thread sizes, costs around $150+
500D comes with 52mm, 58mm, 72mm and 77mm thread sizes, costs around $250

WoLoh, get a cheap +4 closeup lens and screw on to your 28-135, voila you got a macro lens

I would propose that we should have multiple themes since not everyone likes to shoot Macro or own a macro lens.

Themes for the Day

1) Macro & Close-ups
2) Nature (e.g. birdies)
3) Candids
4) Portraits

Shall we have some friendly competition? Each CanonGraphers can participate in any of the above themes but can only submit ONE best picture for the day for each theme. After which, all of us will select the best photo for each theme for the day.

There are no prizes, just do it in the name of fun and fellowship for CanonGraphers.
