[ Firmware Update! ] EP-1 Firmware Update V1.2

Keeping my fingers cross for an EP2 update hopefully not too long from now.

If Olympus is able to get the AF speed of EP1/EP2 to that of the GF1, then it'll make everybody happy:D

Thats weird

what's even weirder is when i check the "Camera Version Information" under the Camera menu, neither the body (e-p1) nor the lens (panny 20mm) version is displayed! they should be both at 1.1... maybe that's why the update is failing, can't detect which body/ver so how to determine firmware to check online...

sigh, tried connecting the e-p1 w/o lens and checking version/update but same results... grrrr

Finally found the problem, whewww! In Mac OS X Snow Leopard, have to boot into 32-bit mode to get it to work. I almost forgot I set my Mac to always boot into 64-bit mode.

Updating now, thanks!

Haha, welcome? I don't even know how my advice helped you :bsmilie: Snow Leopard can boot into 64bit?I never knew...then again,I'm still using Leopard, waiting for my MacBook in March, than got Snow Leopard :D

Also,I believe Uncle Tomcat, you've tried the FL14 with E-P2 and it doesn't over expose right?IIRC,that was the result. So I guess it might be hardware or it has yet to be brought up to their concern or some other reason, maybe it's to get more people to buy E-P2, I have no idea, these are just my guesses

Yes, the FL14 works beautifully in TTL mode on the E-P2. It will fill-in properly even when the camera is only 6" away from the subject, like in this test shot taken with the m43 Leica 45mm f/2.8 Macro...

Try that with the E-P1 or the GF1 and you would just get gross over-exposure.

^^^ Why work on EP-2 and not EP-1 after 2 firmwares? Only thing I can guess is that those who bought the EP-2 also bought a FL-14 which is a later batch of flashes that has hardware bugs fixed???

Not true. I bought the FL-14 together with the E-P2 and the FL-14 does not work on my E-P1 like it does on the E-P2. In any case, the FL-14 is not packaged together with the E-P2 but taken directly off the shelf from whatever remaining stock of FL-14 the dealer has at the time. The FL-14 does not sell well due to its high retail price if bought separately or with the E-P1 and the stock in the shop is usually old stock from the launch of the E-P1.

If the over-exposure problem could not be resolved by a firmware upgrade in the E-P1, it is likely to be hardware related and was resolved in the design of the E-P2.

.... and this is what you will get when the FL14 is used close up on a E-P1 with updated firmware...

The camera is even further away from the subject than the first example with the E-P2 some more.

that is very bad,and ouch for your cat, pupils open so big than kana flash up close, there are many possibilities, but Olympus probably knows which are the problem, the possibility of hardware relation is also possible

unlike most animals that have red eyes right?XD,I use FL-36R,FL-50R and my Metz 45 CL1 with no problem, only Metz in auto mode, very nice lighting, the FL flashes in TTL not always consistent, then again, might be my fault as I'm not completely sure how to use TTL :D

the cat's poor eyes! lol Let's hope firmware #3 will fix it on the ep-1

what good news!!! :) *off to download*

Are Olympus even aware of this flash issue?

I really hope they do. I'm clinging on to my FL14 ... hoping they come up with a firmware that fixes it. Duh. Else I'll have to wait for EP3 just to use that flash. ;(

Hi,
This was the reply I got from Olympus Japan concerning firmware upgrade for E-P2.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your e-mail concerning fimware upgrade for
the Olympus Pen series digital cameras.

The E-P2 has been designed to incorporate the features that
are the same with the E-P1 fimware upgrade ver.1.2 by default.
Therefore, the E-P2 does not need to be upgraded this time.

So, we do not have any information that a new firmware upgrade
will be released for the E-P2 as of now.

Finally got round to update v1.2 firmware for my E-P1. I specifically did some test prior to the update. Personally, I don't think the firmware improves the focusing speed (I wasn't complaining in the first place, anyway), but I think it now beeps a tad faster before confirming focus. As the camera 'beep', the focus is complete. Previously, it confirms focus then beeps.

And for those who want to know, I did experiment with turning off the focus confirmation beep to do the test. So I guess there is a reason why Olympus did not 'advertise' the improvement in focus speed in this firmware update.

Of course, my own test are not scientifically accurate or of any importance, but that is the 'feel' I get from the firmware update. YMMV, of course. :)

I recently took the E-P1 and 20mm lens to the ChimeLong Circus in GuangZhou, I was seated quite far back, and I have to say, the combination work extremely well! I learnt a lesson on exposure though... The initial shots were over-exposed, I was using ESP metering, and I guess the camera adjusted for the darkness, hence the white costumes were all over-exposed. Switched to spot-metering for the rest of the show, and all was well! :)

So as the saying goes, it's the man behind the camera
