I had used sensia and kodak elite chrome extra colour. both $7 plus. sensia better for portrait i think.

Actually, I used velvia 50 on people photography in the past. I like the pink skin tone during day time and like the orange grow at night.

iso50 helps because I shoot portrait at wide open(bokeh) + flash(catch light) and my camera maximum flash sycn is 1/125.

so far, canon 5D skin tone is the best. Do you guys think slide still have a edge over digital when skin tone is concerned.

film at fotohub (beach rd) usually costs more than the penin shops.

kodak elite chrome extra colour (100 iso) should be the cheapest 100 iso slide available. about a month ago, ruby sold it for $7.50/roll.

Orient also sold it the last time i was there (also about a month ago). i bought 6 rolls at $7 a piece, after some haggling of course.

other cheaper options might be sensia 100 (which should be cheaper than EBX) and ektachrome 100 (EPP) but i'm not too sure of their current prices.

Casualsnapper - if you into portraits and particular about neutral rendering of skin tones, look out for Astia.

Yes, more particularly on medium format (as I usually use B&W on an RF, and B&W film tones are something else). On digital, I do prefer the color skin tones on a Canon, and I would look at the Canon EOS 1DS 3, but the Hasselblad digital is something else too, although much much more expensive (and it can use film, Hasselblad knows the value of film to its users).

I always find my slides more bright, colourful and detail than my scan(only use 1 lab so far). Which lab scan is good and cheap? I heard epson scanner not bad. Any comments?

Most Canon and Epson flatbed scanners are decent, even lower-priced ones ... that is for lower resolution images for the web, like below 300 dpi.

It's only when one wants 3200++ dpi that makes me want a good dedicated scanner like a Nikon Coolscan, for 35mm negatives (an Epson V700 is fantastic for MF film). Unfortunately, I to do digital darkroom stuff on many of my scanned pictures, and it doesn't make sense to do them on a low resolution image, in case I want to print the edited image huge one day, or some organization wants them in high resolution.

I've had good experiences with the current-generation Canon flatbed scanners all the way up to 2400dpi. Still decently sharp even when I zoom to 100%. Of course, good camera, good lens, good film, blah blah.. all needed. When scanning a medium format slide this resolution will yield 22 megapixels in 645 format. Far more than I need. Usually I scan at 1600 for ~11MP. Also note I am not really a serious user. I shoot film for fun and because I enjoy it, so a $340 scanner was better priced for me.

I've also had some very bad experiences with lab scanning. Crushed shadows and blown highlights in the same frame, and grain the size of footballs on Velvia slide film :bigeyes: rather DIY.. at least I know that even my cheap scanner can yield much better results than what I'm getting commercially. The only thing is that it is time consuming.....sit there with the scanner and change film.. :sticktong

If you are ONLY scanning 35mm film you can buy an even cheaper scanner, around $200+.

Most shops in singapore dont sell this model. Anyone has second hand or any comment on this model?

Epson Perfection V700 Photo is more expensive. Is that much better than 4990 due to dual lens system?

I may move to non-digital medium format(seagull) in future if i invest in a scanner now. A flat bed scanner may be the way to go. Seem to scan faster than delicated scanner. i may be wrong as i never own a scanner. Unless nikon introduce a cheap full frame, spot metering, rear sycn and 100% viewfinder or my friends convince me to trade in all my AFD nikon lens and a trusty centre weight metering only if you walk up close to "spot meter" the face F60 camera, i may buy a canon 5D or better.

I am thinking of investing on 85mm 1.4 nikon for $1,400 if i stick with my F60. My 105mm 2.8D macro cant shoot at 2.8 if focus less than 3m.

Just went to Hanoi, Vietnam. It seems to be a heaven for photography with film.
35mm Superia-200, Fuji Pro 200 costs less than SGD$2/roll.
C41 + scan (7-9MP/photo) costs SGD$1.5/roll.
But they don't do slide processing :cry:
Repair service is dirt cheap as well. They cleaned my flektogon lens for less than $3, fixed my Contax RTSII for $15 (P&G in adephile quoted me $250 here). They do all kind of repair/clean/mount conversion (FD->EOS costs $30) and service quality is very good.
