First of all, let me make it clear to matty or anyone reading this that i have nothing personal against matty. All these are just a personal thought.

This is for a dslr feature in the Oct/Nov issue of PC Mag Singapore. I hate the fact that it doesnt pay but then again, if it could, I would have just gone to a model agency. Having said that, of course I am not expecting a professional model. I hope you be that someday and command the 400 bucks a day fee, but for now, if you are an aspiring model, have a few looks and poses under your belt and want to appear on most of the news stands in Singapore for a month, drop me a mail at
matthew@critical.com.sg
just f.y.i., 400 bucks a day is considered very very low, even for street talent without experience.

I actually thought abt it for a very long time before deciding to come here and post for a model. I know that there will be lots of banter and OT and i could just get some SQ girlfriends to do the job but then again hey, what is a community for? We all need help getting somewhere we want to be. Its going to sound cheesy and i know some of you guys are shaking your head and think i am dangling a carrot as you reading this, but if we really do well and next time if i was doing work for another mag, or in another situation where it pays, hell yah i'll pay you. Plus instead of just time for Prints, you are getting time for Mag Cover.
i do shoot for magazines too, and so far non (even the lowest budget ones) had ever asked me to shoot their cover for free, or asked model to do it for free, and you know why?
Cover of the magazine is what everyone will see before picking up the magazine from the bookshelf to browse or buy, so the publishers know that it's important to get the right person to put the right picture for the cover.
Like what a lot of pros here would say, when you pay peanuts you get monkey, and when you ask for free, you jolly well know what you'll get...
Please spare a thought for your or your client's magazine.

Yes I do get upset when people come in here looking for free photographers, free models, free MUA, etc Yes I do believe we need to place value in our work/art.
and yet you're still doing it???
I just dun believe it... :bsmilie:

But it is when you are at process of creating this work then people can notice you for your work. You are not going to get a paying photography gig, just sitting at home and surfing clubsnap, are you? Go for these free gigs with a couple of things in mind and a stack full of namecards.
have it ever occur to you that you're helping others to save money with your service and making yourself a public enemy in the same time?
ask yourself this question again... what do you stand to gain at the end of it all?
more experience? or more enemies?

1. Opportunity to hone your skills
well, you can always join the others for the model shoots, with a fee and more privacy, or even join the shoots organised by SLCC
that is free of charge...
even a TFCD sounds like a better deal...

2.Photography is a people business, practise your social skills,
making yourself a public enemy doesn't sound like a good social skill to me...
think about the future when your client knows that you used to shoot for free for commercial jobs...
how would they rate you?

3.Network, Network, Network. Thats how I got my job and I still shoot stuff for free, now its just that I get to choose what I want to shoot.
and in the end, you're still doing them for free...
worse still, now you're getting others to do it for free too... :bsmilie:
ok enough said, despite how others are making noises about it, i am sure there are potential models who will want to do it for you.
So all the best for the model hunting and the beautiful pictures...
