Not true. I bought the s820 knowing the i850 is coming, and chose the s820 for its 6 colour inks.

The i850 has a 2 picolitre microdroplet technology.
It results in the photo being more "fine".

The S820 is 4 picolitre.

Also the i850 can print at a higher resolution than the S820. 4800 x 1200 vs 2400 x 1200

S820 is 4 ppm for mono and color
i850 is 22ppm for mono, 14ppm for color.

i850 has Photo Noise Reduction feature. S820 does not.

From Canon.com.sg

i850 (trying to achieve the effects of a 6-colour printer) is not a full-2picoliter printer.

Flawless photo printout with 2/5 picolitre diminutive ink droplets because of microfine technology. The 2 picolitre ink filled the gaps left by 5 picolitre ink to achieve the equivalent of 6 colour ink printing. (Read more about it in "Quick Glance at Canon Bubble Jet Technology .)
