OT a bit.
Ya lor....... I'm afraid I will be one of them soon.
Like what Bernard said, we can start a 'F828 to D70' support group. :D

The Dark Side I sense in you, difficult to see, the future is.

The same thing happened to me today. The
CCD is dead and since it was stuck to the lens
the whole thing needs to be canned as the
camera is no longer worth it.

Sony will no longer stick the CCD to the lens
for future cameras.

Am looking at a panasonic FZ20 as my backup
camera for my D70.

Really sorry to hear that. I'm also an owner of Sony 717; fear the same will happen to mine. So far, nothing yet except some verticle streaks when taking pics in bright sunlight.

Its good to hear that Sony have decided not to stick the CCD to the lens. (but why not our models...)

Maybe they are still R& D on it.

Hi Wai5580,

Oh man, this is really bad!
I found out my 1 year 8 months 717 broke down today as well. Same thing, no exact cause. In fact, I am still using it few weeks ago (less than a month) and been kept it in the drybox since then.

I haven't checked with Sony, since they are closed on weekend (crap man, weekdays I am working, so how to go there..). I would like to ask you a favor to check if our 717s have the same problem.

I am still able to power up the camera, the LCD is still able to view the image in memory stick. All functionality is still OK. But in the shooting mode, the LCD is blank (black), and it has a purple line at the top of the LCD. I could not see anything else but black screen.

Does your 717 have the same problem?

Thanks.

Hi people!

A month ago my 1.5year old 717 suddenly broke down for no apparent reason. (and what luck, extended warranty just over a couple of months) The camera could not take pictures anymore... fearing the worst i sent it to sony for a checkup.

The reason: Faulty CCD, but this CCD was connected to the lens substructure and therefore the entire part will have to be replaced. They said that they do not have spares for just the CCD.

The quotation: $SGD1000!!! My god!!! i guessed the Carl Ziess lens was the main inflator of price. They gave me a further 20% discount i refused and till now the camera is sitting in its dry box together with 2 batteries, charger, pouch, filters... ...

Are all Dcams made like this? (faulty CCD = lens & CCD replacement) anynoe got such experience? Is there still 'scrap' value for the camera?

hi hleonz,

Sorry 4 the late reply.

I would say that we have exactly the same problem. Did you bring it in 4 a check-up? Did you get a quote?

Wai

Hi Wai,

Please check your PM. I am trying to contact u. Can u give me your contact thru PM?

Wai

I just brought the item to Sony for investigation yesterday. It probably takes till next week. I'll update you once I got the quote.

Btw, I just realise that Sony has changed their service center from the one near commonwealth MRT to Orchard wisma atria.

Hi, I got the result.
They called it "lens assembly" problem. I am not too sure what does it mean.
Also, they couldn't determine what is the cause of this problem.

The repair cost will be $560 (for lens) and $80 (for standard repair charge).
The total is $640, which is quite different from what they quote Wai ($1000?).
Yet, $640 is still *very* expensive for me.

What do you think, guys?
I am just afraid that if I proceed with the repair, few months later, some other problems pop up without any reason (as what is happenning now).

Please give some advice.
Thanks.

Hi! Haven't been in sony forum for a long time (went to film, recently went to MF), and this is worrisome. My camera's also around this time frame, what's worst mine shot like 4k++ images.

hleonz, check if they provide warranty after repair? If they do, it may be ok to go along with it if you really like this camera. I know I do, this camera is all I use for stuff I put on the web. This really sucks, 600-1k for this baby's repair...

Hi, maybe its a different camera but I have never sold my 2 year 9 month old sony 707 to get a 717 (no value). I have shot approx 12000 pics with the 707. Also get vertical streaks with the camera on preview only but not in the actual picture, often get red eyes when people are in dimly lit places. Occassionally have memory stick errors but a reformat would solve it. Even the P, A, S, M, SCN, playback have been completely scratched off from the mode dial, leaving bit of green color for me to gauge the auto mode location.

But... I learnt photography with it -> priceless...

Now, I use it for wired relases where a D70 remote can't reach, of course it is also easier to carry around than a D70, but the high noise and slow AF speed put me off sometimes...

Hi Alvin,
They do provide warranty only for the part they change (i.e. the lens) for 3 months after repair. After 3 months, we gotta cross our fingers..

Hi kfeng,
This is my first camera that I used to learn photography as well (..still learning...) and it is just failed on me, even before I make full of its capabilities. If its LCD is dead, I am still okay (well, not that okay, but at least it still can shoot and take picture using the viewfinder). Anything other than this problem (where I cannot take any picture at all, coz it's all black!), I still can live with it (i.e. not really bother to repair if the cost is really high).

But the problem is, if I dun repair it, I only can use it as memory stick reader (i.e. to view my stored pictures).

Copied and pasted from other thread:

I had a similar problem also... no more signal from the CCD, only some red streaks at the side. Like this:
fault.jpg

Sent it back to Sony, and they replaced a "Lens, Block Assembly". Thankfully, there wasn't any extra charge over the $80 service charge...

Did I just get a new CCD? ;p

Looks like the "lens assembly" problem is not an isolated one.. several ppl has already encountered this.. and it is too costly to be repaired.. sigh..

f55user,
they didn't quote u any price for the part repair?

My F717 is still lying unused in my cabinet.. I still hope I can resurrect it.. :)

No le they didn't charge me for the replaced parts. Pay $84 ($80+5%) and walk out with effectively new 717.

Maybe you should go send it in... cuz there was another guy there who also had his lens assembly replaced, also no charge. The most if they quote too $$ then lugi the $10.50 assessment fee... if they dun charge for the parts then u got a working 717... either way also good

Does your F717 still have the warranty?
I tried before to send it in and they quoted me $500-$600 for the replacement. In the end, I paid $10.50 assessment fee and my F717 still a junk.

If yours are out of warranty and only need to pay $84, it's way cool.. I gotta try again sending my RIP F717.. :)

No, my 717 out of warranty long ago... furthermore it's seen some very heavy use, so casing all scratched already (service sheet even wrote "scratches all over the set")...
