faster download card reader?

This looks like a good companion if we are talking about the extreme III series of CF cards

FW card reader will give you a faster copying then a USB 2.0 card reader.
Does your PC/laptop have FW?
seriously. it's not worth it to spend the money to get a slight increase in speed in downloads. 5 mins is already fast, so why don't u make yourself a coffee while you wait for the data transfer to complete? it's not like you gotta transfer 4 GB of data every hour such that having a super fast card reader saves you time (money)?
you can always do something else in that 5 mins. or while it's still copying u can open a few files and start editing away.

the FW port needs to be normal size, not the small 1 for DV...
if you have the normal 1, i don't mind to let you test and you see for yourself the speed of copying is the time that you want to wait.

Got adapter that can convert between the big and small connector one.
Let's look at this logically instead of blindly following the blind.
Forget about getting another card reader.
Given you have a fast card, 150X card (150 * 145kb [yes, that is the official 1x speed] = 22mb/s).
4000/22 = 182 seconds = 3 min at least.
That's assuming you can hit a sustained 22mb/s (don't even dream, there's none) instead of a burst of 22mb/s.
Even with Extreme III, they can only promise a sustained 20mb/s for sequential read/writes (best case situation) Meaning, unless you are writing/reading a single 4gb sized file file, you will not hit 20mb/s.
Given that each RAW file is say, 10mb, and for each file you have to perform a read of the FAT Table.. you're more realistically hitting (estimated) 15mb/s. you'll need 4000/15/60 = 4.44min for the entire 4gb.
Use any USB 2.0+ card reader, they won't differ much.

not really unless you are using Extreme IV (not III)
heres a review. it takes 3min+ to copy 2.2GB of raw file from a 4GB Extreme III

er I think the question is more of.. have you used a USB2 card reader b4? :bsmilie:
Be it a FW400 or FW800 or USB2, You won't see any marked speed difference if you're not using a Extreme IV CF..
If you really really need speed, get a FW800 card reader and a Extreme IV CF card. Shouldn't cost you more than $1k.
