F31d vs F30 - Is it worth the wait

Wow, yowch - that's high praise for the F30! A compact standing its ground against a DSLR!

Just curious how does F30 image compare with a DSLR like Canon 350D?

Is there any objective comparison ?

Using the F30 alongside my S2pro, you can almost mix and match the images without realising the two different cams! Only close scrutiny, DoF or flash effects will tell the two apart clearly. As a matter of fact, ISO 1600 on the F30 is better than that on the S2pro.

?? I compared a F11 to a s3pro at ISO1600. F11 is CLEARLY much worse than the s3pro. Either F30 is much improved over the F11 or s2pro is really noisy at ISO1600.

The S2pro has pattern noise at ISO1600. Don't forget that the S2pro is 5 years behind the F30 in design! At that time, Nikon D200 starts off with ISO200 because it couldn't get teh noise down to ISO100 standard with lower sensitivity of the sensor!

The cleanness of the images is what really makes the ISO1600 of this consumer pocket point-and-shoot affordable camera a fantastic little thing.

Just to update.
Fujifilm Singapore replied my email and said that f31fd will only arrive at Singapore in mid Dec.

Madnezz, thanks for the update.
I guess I will wait till mid dec :)

read today's paper???

F31d is coming soon....wonder how much it'll cost???

Yeap, also saw it in the paper today.
I think they maybe launch at $699 to $749
But what I like best about F31fd, have IR connection, I think very useful if u want to transfer to other device such as my PDA :)
I'm talking about sharing the photo after taken, no need to transfer via computer

do you think performance wise, it'll be better than F30???

I called MS color yesterday, she told me F31fd shd be available by friday, and let me know the price.
I think F30 and F31 just have the same performance but hv additional 2 features: FD + IR

You mean the D100 right?

If so, it's not that they couldn't get the noise down - the 6MP sensor is natively ISO 200...

He he, yes, D100.

Sensor sensitivity (ISO) and noise is inter-related. If you under-power the sensor to have a lower sensitivity, the sensor doe not pick up enough signal to give meaningful image, hence more noise. Similarly, if you over-power up the sensor, such as boosting ISO, you will have signal overloads at times, again, image noise.

The D100 would be great if the noise at sensitivity = ISO100 is acceptable, but it is certainly not so, and Nikon has honourably fixed the lowest ISO to 200, such that the noise is comparable to other cameras/sensors/film at ISO 200.

Back to the topic, f31d vs f30. By specs alone, they are the same, with face detection present in the newer model. Optically should be identical, software should be improved, and maybe a few newer features thrown in (IR). That said, do you really use FD? For the typical home user who can't be bothered to focus properly, FD will be VERY helpful in getting the face sharp. But for the serious hobbyists and SLR-shooters, focusing is part of the game.

And if the FD detects three faces one at 1m away, one at 3m away and another at 5m away, where would the camera focus on? Certainly can't be at all three distances, which comes back to the manual focusing again.

Just called MS Color, the lady who picked up my call said that she has no idea when F31fd will be available. Strange?!?!

Hi armadillo,
Is F31fd available this coming friday (24/11/06) ? Might go down to MS Color if there is ready stock.
Do please kindly let me know the price if you have any new.
Thanks a lot.

hmmm, I spoke to Florence, she promise to call me back tomorrow, for the price.
Infact Sitex show around the corner, maybe can get good deal during the show.

Ok, I think I will wait till then.
Since I have already waited for a couple of month, don't mind waiting for another week.
Thx armadillo.

I think the good deal could be more for F30 than F31fd. I am hoping for that.;)

Oh I see what you mean.

I suppose the point I wanted to make was just that the "native" ISO of the 6MP sony sensor used in the D100 was ISO 200, while the "native" sensitivity in of other sensors is different (e.g. in the 10MP sony sensors it is ISO 100).

You might be right that setting ISO of 100 on the D100 would result in a "noisy" image, and that was the reason for disabling it. (any linkage?) But I would expect it to be something more than that, or for the difference to be so severe that it was completely unacceptable. Even if ISO100 produces images which as noisy as ISO400, it's still not a horrible idea to include the mode?

I was in Tokyo last week and F31fd is already on sale in Japan. It is much expensive than F30. F30 is selling at 34,800 yen. F31fd is selling at 46,800 yen.

It has auto iso (800), which is sorely missed in F30.
