F11 Vertical Banding - Image Quality Issue

Went to MS Color yesterday, too bad I didn't bring the box, so couldn't change the camera yesterday. But I managed to try the display set. Compare to my set, the F11 display set shows no banding problem. Looks like I really got a 'lemon' here.

Will go to MS color again to change my set today. Hopefully as a shop serving professional customer, they would allow me to change it.

Here are crops from the photo I took yesterday at MS Color:

Display Set:

My F11:

Look at the red color of the packaging, and the pouches grey color.

Display Set:

Look at the pouches grey color and the border to the black color, also the blue background.

The difference is very obvious.

How about what gooseberry mentioned about having this problem in Chrome? For the problems you have, were they shot with Standard or Chrome?

Now, I wonder what MS Color would do with your 'lemon'. I hope I won't be the one picking it up.

These are some shots from my F11.

Only saw the vertical banding in one shot - not really bothered by it, but probably need to do some tests to see under what conditions it occurs - seems to be only under the Chrome colour option with severe underexposure.

Well I don't use chrome color, because in most cases it is to saturated. Anyway, looks mine is a lemon, so will try to change it with MS Color today.

Sorry for interrupting .. Can anyone enlighten me -- "What is a Vertical Banding?"

:dunno:

'band' / 'lines'. Use bright LCD monitor to see the pics I posted, you will see vertical lines pattern. Sometime CRT is not sharp enough for it.

So you test on the spot and let MScolor see the difference on their own PC ?

I brought my notebook to check on the spot.

First, I would like to thanks MS Color for their excellent customer service! After I gave them so much trouble, at then end they gave me a mug. MS Color will be my first choice looking for digicams.

Yesterday I went to MS Color again to change my 'lemon' F11. At first I was afraid that it is not gonna be easy since the camera was actually works fine except the banding problem that not obvious for some people. But they even served me a drink for that :D

I short, I tried the second new set, still have banding problem, the third set, same thing :(

Finally I took the display set that giving the best result out of 4 sets of F11 I tried.

Hey FUJI, what's wrong with your Quality Check???

Are the difference obvious? Check for yourself, below are crops from the third set and the display set.

Third Set:

I was if all the F11 belong to the same batch ? Or maybe the display batch belong to the earliest batch ..etc.

Can disclose the serial number on the final F11 which you settle for ?

MScolor really provide good service

I'm also planning to buy the F11 but can't personally go the store and will ask a friend of mine to buy it for me. Of course, I'm concerned about the vertical banding so I would like to know if you can detect it from the camera's LCD or not. Ashamed to ask my friend to go back to the store again to replace in case I get the 'lemon'. Thanks.....

Don't think u can see from the LCD. If you have noted some people who have poor CRT monitor can't even spot the difference on the photo posted.

So i guess it's better u get from a reputable shop (at least they allow u to change within 7 days) or bring your laptop along to compare.

thanks bpribadi for sharing your experience

Hmm... by looking at the EXIF data of your 2 crops, I noticed that the one with banding was set Quality = "Fine", and Exposure program = "Aperture priority", while the display set was Quality = "Normal", and Exposure program = "Normal program". I would suspect Quality setting being the main culprit here since it would probably affect the way noise reduction/sharpening is performed. Perhaps you could try again using the same mode as the display set?

I've also checked the EXIF data of these 4 pictures. Again those with banding were shot with Quality = "Fine", and those without with Quality = "Normal".

No offence, but frankly, even after turning up the brightness on my LCD monitor, I cannot see the vertical banding in the pictures, even after the affected areas were made known. To me, there is not much difference...the noise is like something expected of noisy image. Maybe my eyes are not trained, or my LCD monitor is no good? Anyone has the same views?

Definitely not agree. Just posting the images without telling which is which, and I'm sure some of us, including me, can identify which one has the banding problem.

Hi guys! Yes, I forgot to change the default setting of jpg quality of the display set that I took. Here is another sample from the display set I took (@ ISO 1600, jpg fine) which from my experience (I took almost 400 pics with the previous cam) the previous camera will shows banding:

DSCF0010a.jpg

DSCF0010b.jpg

Unfortunately, we cannot see the banding from the camera LCD monitor, even at max display zoom, must use PC / notebook to see it, zoom it at 100%.

My F11 serial number, the display set I took: 54L50098
The previous ones I tested seem to belong from the same batch as the display set :dunno:

Anyway, as I said, don't be to afraid to take the F11 because of the banding problem. In ISO 400 and below which what we will use often, the banding is not obvious at all, only at ISo 800 and ISO 1600 at 100% zoom then we can see it. The images with banding problem will still looks good at 4R printing, which I think the common size for printing ISO 800 and ISO 1600, I guess not many people can see the banding from the 4R printout.

So, please don't worry about it, you can just take any F11 without worry to much, it is just me that being to picky :p

This only mean that i must bring my laptop along when i wanna buy F11 ..

I will be buying a F11 for my wife on Xmas. The vertical banding will not show on 4R and 8R prints right? Kindly clarify. Heard good reviews about the F10 and can't wait to buy the F11

Care to share the price you bought at MS Color?
