Just bought one black from John3:16 @ a "special regular's" price. Comes with a case and a 4gb SDHC Class 4 (4mb transfer rate) kingston card.
Heres a mini ladies friendly/oriented review, coming from an ex fuji 6900z user which has lasted me over 5 years.
Upon opening the box, "Budget packaging" came to mind. Camera was wrapped in normal plastic, the thin kind from the market or provision store. Other cams I bought were either in thick clear plastic or foam wrap. Maybe fuji's going green with such light packaging. Further inspection revealed an area of lint around the screen. QC issue? Saw pictures of other reviewers and also notice the lint on the screen in their
photo. I inspected the lens and it is flawlessly clean so I purchased it on the spot.
Went back to charge the batteries and brought it out to a dinner party for a field test.
It went head to head with a few of the major "girlfriend class" cameras. Present for the shootout were the Ixus 860IS, 80, Lumix fx 9, and a 400d.
Played around with it and I must say the camera's fast. The focusing, face detention and shutter lags beats all the pns cameras I had played with - Namely the Ixus and Lumix fx series. WOW, to think I had been using a 1.5sec focusing 6900zer.
I won't comment on the IQ or pixel peep since there are plenty of info around.
Usability and UI wise, it never failed to capture those moments where the ixus and lumix were lagging a far .5-2secs behind. Face detention is damn accurate, shutter lag almost non existant.. my friend who was using the ixus commented that he should have brought out his 40D instead.. (which unfortunately we're banned from during a girls night out) a 400d user was impressed at the speed of AF and shutter lag under such dark indoor conditions (fyi marche and streets of orchard). Interface is straight forward with well laid out buttons. I felt no loss without the aperture and shutter priorty as the M and other scene modes is one of the most consistant and accurate. The camera was smart enough to select a sufficient DOF and shutter for close ups or wide shots. It even selected the usual manual settings I would use for certain macro shots. I finally understood fuji's reason on leaving out the A and S modes. They are so confident they didn't need it!
Some positive point of view from night out:
the f100fd is fast and produced natural colors and almost perfect white balance (preset non auto).
Flash recycling and continuous shooting rate is quick and fast enough to capture important sudden moments.
Face detection is spot on. (more advance than the ixus 860 I tried at another time)
Focus tracking is comparable with an slr (compared to a d200 I use for work)
Other points from the ladies,
Bulky and heavy. Yes, it's heavier than the canon or panasonic's offering. I personally like the weight, but the ladies complained.
The product looks obiang, doesn't have a finished look unlike the ixus or lumix. Yeah, the girls like curves, I too felt it could have borrowed some curves of the canon or at least the f50d. Feels rugged like the Ricoh Caplio R7 in my office.
Casing given is fugly. Made of PVC and had the cheap "disco ah lian" gloss. Would prefer a nice leather pouch like the sony or panny cams.
Portrait enhanced mode. Quite a fun function for cam whorings.. the ladies shot their hearts out with it, I personally felt it was overly done, like a quick smart blur is photoshop, but it was still fun to use and can save alot of time when u bring it out on a girls night. No way am I gonna be touchin up their faces when they can shoot over a hundred pix in a night.
All in, the camera is a great value at under 500. Low light performance is great, Image stabilisation I can't say (since I don't use it), overall a fun camera for a compact PnS. It will never replace an SLR, but is ready for walkarounds that there isn't a need to bring along an SLR just for it. IQ is one of the best in PnS i've seen (comparing @ 8mp with other 8mp cams I've used).
Design and weight wise, could have been better and be made into a chick magnet camera, but unfortunately, canon and lumix still hold these title.
My Conclusion; One of the top PnS @ the moment (not comparing with f31fd since I had no experience with it) Buy for it's usability and Image taking "EQ" (for lack of a better word..) My gf prefered the sony or panny for looks but the low light and wide angle + low price (for work related use) justified her relegating her old lumix to be a backup cam. Y"GF"MMV lol
And fyi, all the batches I saw at john and mscolor are MIC..
So far checking the pictures from the LCD, pix at iso 400 and above doesn't show any pink banding. Will try it out under prolonged use and do a PS channel checking once I get an SDHC card reader tomorrow.. have to send the photos out for the ladies first lol
I will not be testing it's DR or do critical IQ (100% image crop pixel peeping) since it's not my cam (it's for the gf).
