F/2.8: Pentax 16-50 vs Tamron 17-50 vs Sigma 17-50

did some online research on Pentax 16-50 VS Tamron 17-50. Seems like 16-50 QC is lousier compare to Tamron 17-50. arghhhh....

Is the Tamron wobbling ring "confirm will happen" thing when age?

I nv use both lens before as I am new to DSLR. but I had used my friend 40D with Tamron 1750, not bad leh.

Oic. The video makes it look so easy. Thanks. If it happens to me, I know what not to do. Thanks bro:thumbsup:

It's basically three screws that hold the front ring thing to the lens itself. They come loose for some weird reason. It might not happen to all lenses, but even if it does it's an easy fix (which should nevertheless be done by the service center unless you want to risk damaging the plastic ring and leaving a huge deep gash across the front element) and much less significant than say, SDM failure on the DA*. :dunno: I just recommended a friend to get the Tamron 17-50 over a FA50 and she just told me that she loves it!

I will definitely go for SIGMA. Sigma offers MUCH better macro. All the sayings about Sigma having producing bad lenses no longer applies

Macro is not really a deciding factor when choosing among these 3 lenses? :dunno: Though it could be a nice bonus. The old Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro can do 1:3, but the new 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM that should be released soon will only do 1:5, same as the Pentax and Tamron.

Any idea how much the new sigma 17-50 will cost and whether the pentax one will have HSM ? would really like it to have HSM ;p

sorry for hijacking the thread, but i'm looking at getting the DA* 16-50 as an upgrade from the Sigma 17-70. i've come across several mentions on various forums about the QC issues for the DA*, but not much clarifications. does it mean that first hand lenses from shops might have a chance of being 'soft'? i'll probably be getting my friend who doesn't know a thing about lenses to buy online in the US, so going to the shop to try, or getting an exchange, is out of the question.

a separate question would be about the price-performance ratio comparing the DA* 16-50 and the Tamron 17-50 (and maybe the Sigma 17-70). are there folks who have tried both? and touch your heart WAS IT WORTH IT?!

first hand or second hand for lenses.....hmm. usually only foolishness or desperation will make someone give up truly sharp lenses.

as for which one....the pentax you are paying for SDM motor, Weather-Resistance and SMC coating. Locally the main advantage for Tamron is the longer warranty. Tamron buy from the US if not wrong is 6 years warranty but you will need to pay for shipping back to the dealer you bought from.

Either way, if i remember correctly for both brands if the problem serious will need to go Japan for repair.

so it all depends on what other features you look for in the lens.

I'm not sure if my idea works, feel free to shoot it down if it's flawed...

I would say put the QC issue of the DA* aside first, and decide if you really want the lens. If you are very sure that you're going to want the DA* over the Tamron, then it's time to figure out how the warranty is going to work. I know that you can get international warranty For Pentax stuff if you write an email to the right people, but I can't remember if that's only for bodies or not. Many others here can advise you better than I can about this.... With warranty, if you kena a lemon, you can bring it to Emjay for an exchange since it's a manufacturing defect.

But actually, I didn't check, what's the price difference between getting your friend to buy online and just trying to get it in Singapore? Is it actually worth the trouble?

I can just update the quotation date to show that it's current, always good to do that. :)

Yes. I bought it yesterday from SLR at the same price too. The 2nd last set.

Hmmm I've more or less decided to go for an upgrade from my Sigma 17-70, just that I am not sure whether the DA* is that big of a jump. With the current exchange rate, the DA* would be just over S$1000, which is slightly less than what is listed on the price list here (which seems a bit outdated for this lens). What are the QC issues exactly?

Ah didn't consider too much about the warranty issues. I will be using the camera overseas as I am studying in the UK, so buying in SG doesn't seem to make much of a difference to buying in the US, but someone may advise otherwise? Prices in the UK are just obscene.

The last price I asked at OP was about $1450.00

Thought UK cheaper? The Pentax folks at Pentaxuser.co.uk always recommend a place called SRS.
