I forgot something else. The display of my SP350 kong off on me some time last year. I sent it for repair here in Sg, the guys at Oly Sg told me it would cost $180 to be repaired. Then I brought it to China. Oly China repaired it for RMB300 which is less than S$60

Somebody let the Olympus High St building know abt this please. :sweatsm:

More importantly, they fixed it properly within the first try, right?

The best thing about it was Oly China agent gave a WRITTEN 6 months gaurantee for same fault remedy. That is : if the same fault should happen within a 6 month period they gaurantee to repair it again for free.

The T&C stated 180 days.

let me also share my experince here.

My e1 viewfinder was full of dust. (it is not just one or two tiny spot)
since it was still within the warranty period, I sent to OSC for cleaning.

I was told that it took 2 days. After 2 days, I went to collect. I was shocked when I checked out the viewfinder. It was as dusty before. I was sure NO cleaning job was done at all.

I gave it back to the counter. But this was time i was told it would be ready in 30mins.

I went to funan center walk walk and come back. This time when I collected the camera, the viewfunder was SUPER clean. Spotless at all.

It was not a big issue. But I wonder why they could give me back the camera and told me the viewfinder was cleaned , where it was so obviously that no cleaning job has been done.

Same as the original poser ... the subsequent job took much less time than the initial repair job ....

Read what I said carefully. I did not comment on the quality of service. Its just unrealistic to expect completely dustless lenses, before or after cleaning. Professional or not.

So whats the expectation when you send it for servicing, assuming you do? Please dont shoot a reply saying I will never do that! :) I am trying to understand the need for a customer service center in Singapore which offers to clean your lens.

With regards to general substandard service, thats not very good either!

I almost bought a used E510 for a very good price. Am I glad I did not get into the Olympus system.

Haha...customer service is generally not a criteria when it comes to buying cameras since, and I believe this, all manufacturers will more or less showcase the same level of professionalism. You might want to read some comments in this thread where the topic has overgrown and some of us here are starting to blame the entire customer service industry for display poor professionalism! :) Being an Oly user, I can only say you almost made the right decision! ;)

Sorry to disappoint you, but this is a story I've heard from all the major brands, including Canikon...there's no brand that's immune from bad service; it's not an Olympus only thing.
Anyway, you're the one who's missing out.
Well summed up. Its a disease that needs to be vaccinated at the earliest! There are a lot of complains about how some of the dealers treat their customers as well. Needs to be fixed..somebody needs to start a servicing center for the servicing centers! :D

That's what the parent company is for, write to them complaining about the level of service you received from the local Olympus office, say things that you would never by another Olympus product as long as you live due to the service Olympus delivered, that it's a shame that the reputation of a great product is being damaged by poor service, etc.

Actually right now I'm having a problem with a local store of a large grocery chain...I've written to the head office who were very interested in my complaint, in writing back they even attached a claim number to my email so they can see the progress, and have contacted the local office on my behalf to find out what's going on. The local office was supposed to write me but they haven't as of yet, so I'm going to be writing the head office again using the claim number as a subject so that heads start rolling.

In this part of the world the media are very interested in consumer complaints, to the point where they will fight on your behalf...if you don't get satisfaction the next step is to call the media (although that might not be an available option in your part of the world). In fact I just read of a lens repair story that someone is intending to do just that...they took their lens into a third party that repairs cameras for cleaning out the lens...when the person came back to pick up the lens they were told it was no charge because the tech couldn't take the lens fully apart (only front element) but then they noticed scratches on the lens ring (it came in mint), and when trying it the lens no longer autofocused properly (did so slowly) and the shutter would close but not open again...calls to the store resulted in being called a liar, that they did not even open up the lens, and the person now has to pay a lot more to get the lens repaired by the manufacturer.

eerr...indeed the initial job WAS NOT done at all, and they dare to return the cam to me telling me that it WAS done.

they might tot we are idiot or blind...and could not tell the difference.

Funny that was how I felt at that High Street Building that day. My SP350 could not focus at all. So they claim they updated the firmware. But after some time it could not focus again. I suspected it had to do with the battery. So I ask them if I could purchase original Oly batteries that lasted longer, but they told me "no more stock", only another type of rechargeables. I asked "will these other type of rechargeables last more than 50 shots?" Their reply "no gaurantees". I asked "So what can you do about selling a camera that takes less than 50 shots per battery charge?" .....they might tot I am idiot or a fool to buy an SP350...:sticktong ... 30-50 shots per charge, that must be some 10 years back..sigh

That would make the SP350 an idiot cam.

BTW. did you manage to get them fix your cam focusing problem ?
How many times they took to get it done?

ChanChiek, you'd be doing all of us a big favour, if you could bring this up to Olympus Japan/Olympus HQ. This will help prevent their service standards from eroding as well prevent any of us Olympus users from suffering a similiar fate. Thanks.

That idi... camera is right now lying in the drawer under this computer screen. I just threw away 4 of the 2700mAh rechargeable batteries because they only lasted 10 shots per charge. In the camera right now are 2 new Ni-MH 1700mAh original Oly batteries that takes about 30-50 shots per charge. As for the focusing problem, no it has not been fixed. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Just wondering, would it be good to speak to the local Olyumpus product manager about it? He seems to be a good window to convey the pains the consumers are going through.

that does not sound right.

How could the battery only last 30-50 shots ? Unless u are reviewing each pic for 10mins on the LCD.

Should send for repair as well for the focussing.

I may think that the product manager would claim " you see, I am a product manager. Anything u are not happy with service, it is service manager. U speak to the wrong guy lah." :bsmilie:
