External power for KM7D

i noticed there's a DC port on the left of the 7D for 6v input. if any 7D owner has/ uses an adapter for this could you please advise whats the ampere setting on the adapter (mAH)?

i'm thinking of modding a 6v sealed lead acid battery (prob 3mAH or higher) to feed my power-hungry 7D which cut out on me today in the middle of a shoot (2 batts in the VG!). i suppose an external power input could also effectively charge the np400s in the camera/ VG?

Why don't you get the vertical grip from own user. 2 batteies in the grip and one in the camera.

If my electrical theory still not rusty, I don't think you can control the ampere used by the camera. The "mAH" is used to denote the battery capacity not the ampere it can pump out. For example if it's rated at 2600mAH 1.2v, what it means is it can last for 1 hr if it's being drained at 2600mA. If it's drain at 1300mAH, it can last for 2 hours.

The main thing to watch out is to make sure you supply a constant voltage (6v) to the camera. The ampere used by the camera will go up and down depend on it's need. For example when charging internal flash it will use more. When idle it will use less.

Besides, 3 batts makes the 7d REALLY heavy to wield...

Have used an external lithium-ion battery pack (DPS-9000) on the KM5D before no problem at all. The battery pack is rated at 7.2V.

dun trigger happy lor... i think if u still trigger happy, u need to get a nuclear reactor core in every NP400...

:bsmilie: haha! unlike what my nick suggests i'm hardly trigger happy. but i don't hesitate to shoot. the problem is the 7D's power performance is quite something, dunno if its good or bad, but it milks every milliamp of power from the batt, then goes dead quick. compared to the 5D which gives you two levels of warning, this is quite scary especially when it shuts down suddenly in the middle of a shoot.

so does anyone have an external power adapter for the 7D?

U can only have a max of 2 batteries in the camera - ie. using the grip. The battery compartment is taken up with the connectors and cannot carry a battery unlike the film 7.

You should be able to buy the adaptor from any hardware shop. But buy a reputable brand as some of them may give you more than the 6V you require. Also get one with enough ampre.
