If only given this two option, 17-50 is better as you are using a DX camera.
Also, are you the official photographer? how near can you stand to shoot? or can you had the luxury to move around to shoot from different angle?
If you can only shoot from a distance, a 70-200f2.8 is a much better choice.

the ones i went at esplanade, can get quite close... 1-1.5m from the performance. cannot really move around much. because can get quite crowded after performance start.
other than those around esplanade i don't shoot dance much except maybe events like suntec dance.
but of course can only get close provided i come earlier.
In those tight situations, something that goes down as wide as 15 or 16mm would be ideal.
I believe Nikon has a good quality AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED DX, or the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED (not sure which one is compatible with your cam bod), but frankly, that's just cutting it for full-body shots at your shooting distance on a 1.5x crop body when the performers are close to the front row. Further away, no problems. Also, you'll need to bump up the ISO quite high to freeze motion IIRC.
I guess the cheaper alternative would be the Tamron 17-50 2.8, but I've heard that it focuses slowly in low-light. Also not sure about the after-sales service and repairs with the new agent.
How often and how seriously are you intending to do these performances Ro-Ro?
Edit to add: If it's just one or two specific performances you would like to shoot, you could consider borrowing lenses, or renting.

not all year round of course. that's why i'm also looking for a lens that can be used for general purpose that is better than my kit lens.
i'm not going to get serious in any specific field of photography right now and am just trying out different things to get a feel oh things.
i dunno if i sound a bit shallow but that's just what i feel.

No, eesh nawt shallow at all, but stage performances and dance usually means beri expensive fast as possible zooms and a body that can allow you to go a min of ISO 1600 or 3200 with as little noise as possible. Mabbie try to borrow in the mean time if purchase is not favourable, or shoot with very fast primes.

argh... auto update freezes, manual install update also freezes.
need to restart ones freezes, no need to restart one also freeze.

:cry:sry Mo, i cant help u. havent encountered such problem before.
maybe try uninstalling n reinstalling? (ie format) if not, send to service centre. but that usually takes a few days. :sweat::cry:

hihi sorry i haven't been on the thread. just popped by and saw my name.
i can't offer any solutions though :/ but i think you should bring it down to apple to get it checked.
