i think my laptop sound card just went kaput, got intermittent sound then now no more

says audio device not installed

will using usb speaker resolve this problem?

Nope...

you can try to re-install the audio drivers and see if that helps.... but if it's the hardware failure (i.e. the on-board speakers died), then mebbe can try using headphones and see if there is any sound.

i think after 3rd year of photography, everytime i go travel i never exceed 2gb of photos, storage not a problem.

i use my laptop to watch movies at night, don't really go out at night when travelling

yar, netbook now very cheap, even lowend notebook also $699 only. maybe buy next year.
