I know one is to try and keep camera parallel.

barrel distortion is unavoidable, just know how to handle it post process, you can make it easier by not putting essential elements on the corner of your lenses, or making sure elements which do not look like sai distorted are not there, e.g. humans.

vertical and horizontal distortion, if you understand how it works, is no problem really. vertical distortion solution is to make camera back parallel to the true vertical, that will make it negligible or not present; horizontal distortion solution is to make your camera parallel with the bank nearest you in landscapes, or the camera parallel to the wall. sometimes it cannot be avoided, so you can just minimise to reduce cropping after post process.

a spirit level will help with vert distortion for sure.
