Every picture tells a story

Thanks Teng for your kind comments. :) Lol... I'm really quite a private person so I dun really fancy me being identified haha.

Nice action pics Teng. Looks like you had a lot of fun :)

What is fine art photography?

I recently placed a notice in events and exhibition on an exhibition and talk on "Appreciating colour photography" by Clinton Chan.
To date there has been no response. Maybe many are not aware or maybe the topic is not appealing to their style.
I am just highlighting the event here for those who may have missed the thread in events and who may be interested.

The date is tomorrow 3-6pm , talk at 4pm.

If keen, please register with that thread in events, "10 invitations..."

Hopefully a new direction in our photographic journey will blossom with a slightly better understanding on what an artist does, think and presents that make his photo an artwork.
Besides we can always adjourn to some haze free place for makan after the session.

#blossom

13 Wilkie Terrace.

Today was a bit of an art blast for me. First i attended an exhibition and a talk on "appreciating colour photography". I walked away with a better understanding of colour photography. And of course every picture must have a story to put it in context. I also found out that a picture must have a special quality, "thereness" for it to stand out. Even if it is a 4"X6" print. What's thereness? Google it.

After that it was off to the DISPLACEMENTSis an art exhibition/festival at a soon to be torn down 77 year-old pre-war bungalow at 13 Wilkie Terrace.
Do i feel for this building, well no. It and the surrounding area holds no memories for me. But it does represent another loss of some old buildings, only to be replaced by another modern apartment. So why bother taking pictures of this building? I suppose i am curious to hear the stories of the old building. So here is my take.

#Every house has a story to tell.
The installation artwork in this image is by Karen and Alex Mitchell. I took the liberty to include their work in my photograph. On 5 June 2013, on the thread Exhibition and events, Clubsnap, weiteck posted "You are all welcome to take photo & capture memories of this place before it's gone". Should i have misintepreted this ,i sincerely apologise, please let me know and i will delete the image.

And i met some interesting people at this place, do drop by tomorrow to check out this old building before it rides into the sunset.
As for "thereness" the Eye-gasm exhibition is still ongoing, do drop in to checkout the works too.

Here are the artists_at rest.

Thanks a lot! Karen and Alex Mitchell for allowing your work to be posted together with my photo. Your work adds context to the picture! In fact it inspired this story.
Thanks weiteck for taking the time to explain your works to me.
Thanks shizuma, i am glad you approve of kercil : )

I look forward to your stories. Thank you.

In search of lobster.

It all started with a suggestion by Mr.Huang, a self proclaimed Johor foodie in search of lost and authentic flavors, to explore the lobster village in Sungei Rengit, Pengerang, JB.

And so the trip to explore this village came to fruition with all members of the 3 families hyped up and ready to go. That's when the plan started to deviate from the intent. The plan to hire a mini bus to ferry all of us there was scuttled, no mini bus available that weekend. Since the other ride could result in a sardine like condition as well as smelling and scratching like cats, the entourage was reduced to 4, to the disappointment or delight of the younger kids? I think mostly disappointed for not being able to join in the get together but delighted that they do not need to clap n sing for their food.

The final entourage consisting of Mr.Huang: the driver and buyer(of lunch),

Miss Sally:the navigator and most important to stimulate and keep driver awake,

Mr.Mike:the self proclaimed Singapore foodie,

and tk: the photographer and his thirst for capturing the moment.

During the drive there were the usual discussions on the efficiency of the vehicular movement at the causeway, to give way or not ot give way to vehicles, the economy of highway or side road robbery etc. Before you know it we were well on our way to lobster village.

we crossed a bridge, do take note of the aeroplane flying overhead.

We passed floating attap houses,

what started off as a hot day became bearable once we got used to it.There was even a sighting of a giant teddy bear.

9349494509_7ffc40d4d4_b.jpg

Before you know it we arrived at the village. 1245hr.Not a moment too soon, our stomachs were ready.

9352276158_2e07644b20_b.jpg

We were not alone in this outing, there were many other Singaporeans descending on this village.
We managed to find a table fairly quickly and settled down to order lunch.
We had lobsters in 2 styles, one baked, one steamed
There were the spicy clams, vegetable, a plate of fried bee hoon and a chicken herbal soup.

9349494783_452cd40ed1_b.jpg

The photographer apologises for the absence of photos of food, his priority changed as soon as food appeared on the table. Besides you can see better food pictures at the johorkaki blog.

We continued to explore the village, and met some friendly people welcoming us, possibly the lobster town's welcome sign.

9349493747_bc1e5175d7_c.jpg

We also found the only tourist trap selling local produce. We bought some local produce, some preserved lime concentrate for making soothing drinks. Of course that was after we taste tested every sample offered.
There were other seafood restaurant.

We came across the symbol of the town. Across the road from where we stood was this stainless steel sculpture welcoming all to lobster village.

9349496777_5e26c997bd_b.jpg

I always wanted to do a shot of an animal crossing the road with cars streaming by and with a toy town effect, just my luck to see this black cat. So here is the shot with in camera selective blur. There is a sense of vulnerability.

9349299135_5f1b7e4875_b.jpg

Following the cat also led us to the the most scenic part,(at least along the path that we took) of this village, i am sure there were many other interesting sights,

Here i imagined the sound of waves lapping against the pristine white beach, the sight of a old wooden jetty

9352079356_1ef9ec13a3_b.jpg

and of course the swaying coconut tree.

9352050630_7d7e9e140e_b.jpg

The scene must have an effect on Mr.Huang and before we can say "What a beautiful sight!" . Mr.Huang started serenading Miss Sally.
He was suddenly hit by a wave of nostalgia, probably because it looked like a setting in a Shaw Brothers romance movie set in the Nanyang during the sixties

9352276414_4a3be755db_z.jpg

I am not sure what got to him but i am definitely sure that he was not hit on the head by a falling coconut. Maybe it was the chicken soup?

There was a quick shower on the way back. Lasted only a while.
We were reminded on our way back about the importance of safe driving. We can never be too careful. Fortunately no one appeared to be hurt.

9352275088_a9c2e9a2ab_b.jpg

There was a slight detour to check out the Aeon shopping centre, same old same old. You see one, you see them all.
We had dessert and bought ...bread home for the family. An attempt to detour for some special fried bee hoon was interrupted by a confused gps, hence no supper for the kids back home.
As usual the way home was again interrupted by jam at the causeway.
All in it was a pretty fun day, food was good and company great! Did we miss the kids...?

9352311938_b0ecc864ab_c.jpg

The food trip left us with quite a thirst, must be the msg or the weather. Till our next trip hopefully with clapping and singing.
alternate ending: kids? Er, what kids...

I look forward to your stories. Thank you.

Come fly with me to The Land of Giants.

A last minute decision to drop by a kite festival yesterday at west coast park turned out to be most fun. It brought out the kid in me.
It was a perfect day for kite flying. Great blue sky with nice cloud formation.

The field at the park was transformed into a land of giants.

9435641843_934c53ce93_z.jpg

I was immediately dwarfed by giant bears in the air

and on the ground.

9438422694_644eeabe93.jpg

An almost surreal dreamscape.

The bubble artists,

9438418696_d0a58e7454_h.jpg

the kids were so bent on bursting the bubbles that the large bubbles hardly have time to float through the air, such a waste.

9438418500_8b4098a0db_h.jpg

They should just lie on the grass and watch the bubbles float away.

9435638331_8d0fd9e2c4_h.jpg

There were the more imaginative kids living out their fantasies,
confronting giants with her smile, that’s little bo peep herding her bear…

Besides the kids having fun, the adults had their share too.
Some prefer to do the kite flying themselves rather than to have his kid fly the kite, poor kid!

9438422564_67732f6499_z.jpg

There was this chap whose kite line was so... long

9435641245_595b3e7e3b_b.jpg

that it took him at least half an hour to rein in the line! And he had to wear gloves so as not to cut himself. Pretty hard work if the wind is strong!

It was quite a drag, i had a go at pulling too.

What goes up must come down, in fact these gentle giants fall with such grace, you can almost hear them say “Over here, shoot me!”

Once down they become happy targets for …photographers.

9435639707_1959e4827d_h.jpg

Even though i did not fly a kite, i did buy a green squid kite to bring home for another day.

9438419802_881243f681_h.jpg

I was surrounded by nothing but joy, like everyone else , my spirit soared with the kites.

Up, up and away! Above the clouds and beyond!

9438422672_dce5b999ae_z.jpg

It was a pretty uplifting experience thanks to the efforts of ACT3 and members of a kite association. Their efforts made it a great day for all who were there.

I look forward to your stories. Thank you.

For those who missed the previous kite festival, here's the next one.

Make time for it, i had plenty of fun.

If you have kids, bring them. Kites can be bought on site, at least the last time there was a tent selling them.

The event has a happy ring to it.
Don't miss it!

Man vs nature.

I am always on the look out for scenes depicting man's influence on nature.
Many a times nature stands in the way of our progress and must make way for us,
we try to integrate as best as we can.

9702271238_88b6cabb71_c.jpg

Yesterday, i came across this while out on my usual weekend nature walk.
Man won, Nature lost.

9701926384_392025dbe2_c.jpg

I am sure there was a pretty good reason for felling the tree, could be weakened, diseased.
I just noticed the man shouldering the burden of taking care of mother nature so that we have a better future.

I look forward to your stories. Thank you.

A night out at the opera turned out to be more than what I intended.

I do not profess to know what really makes an opera troupe ticks or what the future holds, it may seem presumptious to some but these are my impressions.

The beauty and splendour of the Teochew opera was revealed to me. I managed to spend a couple of sessions with a Teochew opera troupe. A world little changed from a bygone era.

Behind these flaps pulse the heart beat of the opera.

The passage between the two worlds, backstage and the audience.

10056500593_281ef4fcd0_b.jpg

Preparation includes getting enough rest. This elderly gentleman moves around slowly in the backstage yet is energised when on stage. There is a fatalistic tone to this image reflecting the inevitable fate of our opera scene. Hopefully I am wrong.
