true lah, $5 is really a little too pathetic. even KFC offers $7/hour for cleaning jobs.
But then if it's for a good cause such as charities and stuff, I won't mind doing it for free.
At least I won't but seeing all the ugly sides.

yah, a friend's aunty went to enquire and got interviewed. It's like early cleaning jobs (maybe like 6am?)that's in lakeside, near the old Chinese City (or whatever it was called). try calling them up
but then a lot of places are paying more than just $5 mah. I always thought photographers are more respectable. R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

You'll feel better to work for free (as you decided to do charity work) than getting a low pay (which suggest you profession is not respected, or your skill is not valued).
Some more 2 cents worth - for those who say it's ok to accept pay like $5 an hour 'cos it will give an opportunity to gain experience & exposure, you have to realise that it might come back to haunt you or bite you in the azz in the future when you have become a full-fledged 'pro' when some of your less scrupulous clients will say 'But there are photographers who will do the shoot for $5 an hour only what'.....

Event companies are always looking for "talented up and coming photographers (or whatever) that will be willing to work for nuts (not peanuts .... peanuts are expensive), and if it goes through, the Event companies will be at the praising end for organising a well planned event, if it goes wrong .... it is always the photographers' fault as they are not producing what they are tasked"Optodexine

Eh guys 5 pages of flaming... hahaha well done man. Open market la, everyone can quote his or her price, if more experienced photographers cannot compete with a newbie who charges $5 an hour then maybe it is time they reflect on themselves and question how they market themselves.
That said, Booooo to this event company. No class man, $5 an hour is what you pay a temp worker, with office equipment provided. This kind of offers here will only serve to seriously upset everyone. Being a photographer urself you should know how much our equipment cost. If you are gonna pay this amount, I think it is better to offer sponsorship or advertising opportunities to a photography company, allow them to setup banners and wear their own T Shirts and uniforms.
Instead of paying 10 cheap photographers, maybe hiring 1 good one will be better. I mean, 10 x $5 = $50 per hour
10 x $10 = $100 for transportation
20 x $4 = $80 for food
Total budget = (10 hours x $50) + $100 + $80= $680
I will gladly do it man. hahahaha

If you can write me a reasonably profitble business plan showing how I can beat $5 per hour fares, I'll be more than happy to do some reflection and revise my charges. I can do those during free time.

You cannot beat it.. so to speak. but you have to market urself differently. Pros dun just sell good photos. Cos some fresh and cheap photographers also produce good photos. What pros sell is assurance, image (go to an event dressed nicely), they are co-hosts (mingle with guests).
I also offer a money back no questions asked offer to all my clients if they are not completely satisfied. Now I would like to see a $5 dude do the same thing.

Innovations such as instant printing introduced recently by a few studios are also another example how we can differenciate ourselves. Some companies also shoot for free then pass their subject a card for them to purchase their photos online. Like disney land.

If you are offering $5 an hour and still want money back guarantee, you ought to be shot, hanged, electrocuted and corpse fed to the dogs.

btw, what's the market rates via quotations for 10 photographers to cover an event?
presumingly at reasonable low of $30/hr, x 10 x 10 = $3K modestly?
it maybe out of topic here, but curiously how much does an event company charges their client for providing a services of whopping 10 photographers, and how much does it cost if they were to sub-con this service from a photography company?
btw, i use question marks above for some reasons...
