#17 - Little Leaper, Hani Village

Some shots from the Hani Village. There is a small entrance fee to get in. It is a bona fide village where some of the Hani people actually live. The good news is that it's not commercialized with souvenir shops and stalls. Other than a token museum showcasing some Hani history, and a small snack shop, there isn't that much commerce here, unless you count the tips that the kids and mothers with babies here will ask for in exchange for posing for you. Actually I had a more enriching time exploring Pugaolaozhai (more on that later) and wandering around the rice terraces. You do get a glimpse into the daily lives of the village people though.

They lit up when they saw me shooting them from afar. Gave them a licence to ask me for tips.

The women here reminded me of our Samsui women. Many of them are involved in construction work, very tough. There were no machinery or tools or even a wheelbarrow in sight, everything done by hand.

Literally back-breaking work.

Not an uncommon sight to see a mother working while having a baby strapped to her back.

Thanks cp1238 for viewing. Glad you liked it.

The following photos were captured at a rustic little village called Pugao Laozhai in Duoyishu. There are about 150 families here with a population of less than 1000. Many of the working adults are farmers. They use very traditional farming methods, again with no machinery in sight, just simple tools. Ploughing is done with oxen. Fertilizers are from manure.

Away from the viewing platforms, no crowds in sight...bliss...

The girl in the middle was bawling away just minutes earlier as she was bullied a little by a couple of older kids. Managed to get her to laugh and smile after some cajoling!

This photographer lagi best. He recruited a whole bunch of village kids with a modest tip of a few yuan (1 yuan = S$0.20) each for a photoshoot lasting almost 2 hours! He even got the girl in pink (1st girl on the right) to sing folk songs to the tunes he played on his smartphone during the photoshoot. He even brought a reflector along. His wife was his assistant. Talk about being prepared!

It was hard to keep up with the kids. The footpaths are treacherously narrow and could give way if you're not too careful (or too heavy). One lapse of concentration and falling over means $$$ worth of gear would end up underwater!

very nice series of photos here. Thanks for sharing!

Nice contrast between the modern 'princess' look and the traditional Hani costume!

nice.! should learn from him next time.. haha. is that photographer local or tourist?

He's a domestic tourist but not from Yuanyang I think. He stayed at the same guesthouse/hostel as I did. Seems like he's done this before as he was familiar with the location.
