Hi,

I recently tested the 85mm F1.2 (both Mark 1 and 2) on my friend's 5D Mark2. This lens is very difficult to use even in moderate indoor low light condition wide open. The pics done with this camera is constantly out of focus unless the person literally holds still.

The result is consistent with my older 20D when I use the lens in my friend’s wedding and many precious moments are ruined. These photos are done in one shot mode using the centre focusing point.

I wonder if the 1D mark3 is able to tame this beast and allow the lens to manifest its potential at full aperture without using flash.

Could anyone help to comment?

Problem is not the lens there. Its a very specialized lens not meant for the faint hearted. Wide open at f/1.2, at under 2m distance, your DOF from the lens is around a few millimeter. The normal focus and compose method will not cut it as there is so little margin on the DOF. Which is why you have loads of OOF shots.

You'll be better off with shoot and crop instead if you're not confident of nailing the focus.

Understand.

However, even when the subject is 3m away or more, the same problem persist. Just wondering what's the 1DMark3 owners' experience with this lens at F1.2?

The video replay on my 5D2 LCD screen plays smooth.
but the same file that is play on my laptop using QuickTime is in pieces(like video shot in very low frame per second.

any explanation?

Hi guys, what is the Interchangeable focusing screens?

Eg-A Standard Precision Matte
- the supplied focusing screen, bright and with a normal matte

Eg-D Precision Matte with grid
- a more matte finish easier manual focusing also includes a grid pattern

Eg-S Super Precision Matte
- even more matte but obviously slightly darker, optimized for F2.8 and faster lenses

On the 5D MKII body,it should be the Eg-A focusing screen.
For Eg-D,it has two vertical grid lines and 2 horizontal grid lines.
Once it install in the camera, you can see it in the veiwfinder.

Or can check with 5D MKII manual book on the last few pages of the accessories page.

Canon at Vivo is out of stock for all focusing screen except the Eg-A. I just placed order for an Eg-D (S$39) and they will call when stock comes in.

Yah man, everywhere out stock... Canon said only March then coming in.

Anyway, interesting, I was at Lucky Plaza, itchy, asked this shop facing road at level 1, 5DMII only for 3,600 w/gst haha... they claim local set la but so fast got grey sets meh...

Also, this shop next to McD selling LP-E6 only for $105 cash but not sure if it's fake (is there?)... I was feeling itchy.

Do flip through the 5DMK II manual under focusing screen page.
it will told your the benefit of each focus screen .it depend each individual preference.:)

For me, it will be Eg-D got grid lines. It's easier for aligh for horizontal and verticle line in the view finder to the compose an image.

Eg-S is for focusing screen which make manual focusing easier than Eg-A .Better for user mainly in focus manually. It optimized for faster lens for F2.8,slower lens than F2.8. view finder will look dimmer than Eg-A.

How to changes. under U own risk.

other focus screen can consider under below web link. focus screen.

You can get it changed by CSC with some fee.it totally up to yourself.

Help above information help.

after light gets reflected on the prism into the eyepiece it goes through the focusing screen before what you see on the viewfinder.

if you remember film cameras they had either very dotted (matte) screens or lines (straight or curved or both) to help you check if focus is in place. these are the focusing screens and it went out when auto-focus became big time (all you needed to care about is the focus indicator red box light up).

however there applications where for the more niche user, focus confirmation points don't line up with subject, or some others technique is to time the focusing range and and get ready to snap a few as the focal plane comes into and out of the subject. so there is a still a need for it.

I find focusing by eye more involving and had them on my previous 2 bodies. however note that they do dim out the display a little more - from the matting etc - and third party ones though may be brighter may cause the in-body exposure to mis-read.

Here's a reputable third party focusing screen supplier with lots more info on the site
http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/cat--Canon-DSLRs--cat_canon.html

Personally I prefer the catseye and matted screen without the grid lines.

btw if you havent done this before note that focusing screens are better for faster lenses (Canon recommends F2.8) and be very careful not to get dust on the focusing screen when changing as it is very visible in the viewfinder (not in the image) and is difficult to get rid off.

I think my Mkii is dying soon. First it suddenly hang during a ROM shoot. Turning the power switch on and off doesn't help. I have to pop out the batteries to get it to work. Than it shows Err 02 saying that the CF card is faulty. Change to another card, same msg. Have to remove battery again to get it to work. Put back the same card and it's working too.

I am going crazy man...

Anyone knows how much the WFT-E4 is?
