I passed by John 3:16 this afternoon and saw it was pretty crowded with customers waiting to be served. Mr. Gan and his team is busy serving the customers. I saw Nikons and Canons cameras on the table.

Well, for better or for worst, everyone who purchased the Canon EOS 5D Mark II has their reason of the purchase even during this global financial crisis.

Like falconite said it ... Let your needs guide you... also your pocket too! :)

Yes two camera on the table, one D700 and the other 5D Mk2. Leslie was doing a demo to one bro. I was there for other reason; ended getting the 5D MK2 Body.

Not sure which focusing screen you have been using on your 5D but I'm using my mine from my 5D and it works fine even though it is a tad smaller. Give it a go.

On the 5D - think it was the ee-s focusing screen

I have got mine today for 4k at AP. No stock for the batt grip got to wait.

after shooting movies in Live view, and also shooting photos on the 5D, i have come to conclude that it is virtually impossibly to produce good video, and shoot professional photos at the same time.

I already mentioned that way earlier when the 5d was first released and my view has obviously not changed.

No auto focus. You have to use a tripod for everything to prevent hand shake. You get blurry subjects the moment they move. And you cant follow them accurately if the camera's on the tripod.

And during all that time where you're trying to set up your camera to take that video, you're losing valuable time meant for shooting your professional shots, which means, loads of missed shots.

The only possible feasible scenario is that you have 1 photographer and 1 video grapher, and the videographer is purely using a 5d Mark II just for video purposes, which would be retarded since the 5D is mean to be a still camera in the first place.
I rest my case.

agree that it's not really meant for professional work - imagine the handshake if you're shooting video at 200mm or longer without tripod... :) sure get headache one...

but for a short clip, if people are willing to pay for the option of shooting video, why not?

its not just that. the fact that you have to use tripod, and spend time composing the video shots and constantly turning the focusing ring to focus on the subject, or do your creative stuff. And if you want to create really good video that is "professional quality", you gotta be 100% focused on shooting video throughout the event.

You're basically a videographer now, when you should be shooting professional photos, which is what people are paying you to do.

Even if i had two 5D mark IIs, i would find it incredibly hard to shoot video and photo by myself.

That being said, the video quality is really pretty darn excellent. It absolutely destroys the canon HD camcorders based on the lens quality alone.

I set my cam up with an 85L and it was just heaven. But once my subjected decided to move even a few inches, focus was lost and i had to repeatedly try to get the subject back in focus.

If Canon comes up with a DSLR with AUTO Focus movie mode, its GOOD GAME

Black dot

It look like canon digital SLR development team need to work overnite to chiok out the
latest firmware. It sensor can't changes, which most costly to replace, only way it to fine
tune in the firmware.canon oh canon ,Did you learn the lesson from the 1D MKIII.
End users will test and use the camera features in any extend........
nothing can hide from the end user, if it short coming in any features.......:D

The HD video on the camera it can up to some feature only.Canon still need to protect their
video cam section. There are price need to bare on. body $3.??K, L lens cost min $1-2 K.
total investment $4-5K ... CF card will to consider 16G, but think about on the processing time need to cater on the HD video. Normal user still consider to the canon camcorder. unless for serious amateur.

My guess is 4K before GST.

Just drop by Sim Lim Sq yesterday evening . notice on the ground floor once of the outside electronic shop. It shelve still has a set 5D MKII body with kit. Quote price ard $S5400.

People need to stop complaining about the Black spots and just go out there and start shooting.

Covered my little cousin's 1st yr old Bday today. Shot with an 85L@f1.2, so don't complain about image not being sharp enough. lol

Happy little girl images capture by 5D MKII with 85 F1.2...... WOW.

I run both "N" and "C" System.............BUT

My advice is to hold back any purchase now as the 2 out of the 3 Full Frame OEM Brand is going to drop price early next year (I mean significant DROP!!). I've solid infos that 1 brand going to do a huge price drop in January and the other brand doing likewise in March.

I did want to see how the "C" brand cope and react......

The above is 101% solid infos.........BUT please do not PM me for which brand dropping in Jan and which in March..........:D

Its certainly not very far fetched if Sony decides that they need to push their A900 harder.

But I'm guessing that these competitors are posturing themselves to compete with something that Canon itself is preparing to release. Its something which I think Canon is in the unique position to produce and sell on the DSLR market.

This is entirely my postulation, and something I've been speculating the best part of 1 year now, but I do seriously think that Canon may be preparing for the release of a FF equivalent of its Rebel series. Which like the original Rebel, probably gonna turn the DSLR market on its head ! I think something to look out for in '09 ?

They could either tweak the old 5D's 12mp sensor or the old 1DsMKii sensor and package it into a body with a similar feature set to the 450D, and sell it for double the price of the 450D (costs more than the 50D, FF, but fewer features). And neither Sony nor Nikon has an immediate answer !

Plausible ? :dunno:

I think I need to be specific with my commends toget the point across.

The "S" and "N" is both price higher than the "C" brand. With the introduction of "C" with live HD Video in the feature set, the whole market attention have shift to Canon's advantage. This is 100% true from a consumer standpoint and at least when Canon stand to ramp up and flooded their 5D Mkii to all the shops by Jan to March 2009 - the "S" and "N" will wants to hit back:think:

You can PM me if you want to put a "BET" across as to"S" and "N" will not be dropping their pricing between Jan & Mar?;)

Base on the price of the 5D MKii and you can petty much estimate the whole body would not cost more than USD400. Any one in semiconductor industry would have easily estimated that, In many a times it's not the profit within that segment that determines the price of the product. In 101% of the time, the profitable segment within the Company might be sponsoring the unprofitable Business Unit of the same company. That's the reason in a bad economy, you start seeing company spin-off of Business Units or segment not "aligned) with their strategy - which actually menas not making enough $.

You don't need a shift production to China to drop pricing of a good product with super high margin......

I'm not a pro in a photography world, but at least a pro in my Semiconductor sector.....

Falconite, I see you owns a EOS 5D Mark II. I would presume if CANON shift it production of this DSLR camera from Japan to China or even India, we can expect a price drop in 6 - 12 months. Or maybe a new model to supersede the EOS 5D Mark II that improve the black dot issues with new improved CMOS (maybe made in China).

I agree with you ....... Let your needs or wants guide you to the ownership for now...:)
