Just a word of advice, don't forget to set aside a significant amount of your budget for lenses. Thats where the majority of your cash would be spent. The 18-55mm kit lens is quite good and covers a decent range, esp. the wide end, but soon you might be finding yourself in need of a decent telephoto zoom to cover the long end. Depending on your budget and needs, you might want to look at the Canon EF 28-105mm Mk II USM (~$500) or the EF 28-135mm IS USM (~$900) for starters. Or if you have need for something longer, perhaps the EF 75-300mm IS USM.hptay said:hi Max,
you seem pretty well informed on the camera scene.
I am startin out on the dslr and was wondering about getting the 300D
this is my starting package,
1) 300D kit with lens
2) 1 GB compact flash
3) camera Bag (perhaps lowepro)
4) Camera stand
5) Spare batt
any idea what would the above cost?
any other stuff good to get when startin out?

chriszzz said:That's true. But with prudence and some careful budgeting, you can get by with not much money.
For lenses, learn to find second ones in good condition. Eg, a used 28-105 may be had for around $300 instead of a brand new one at $500+. A third party lens, like a Sigma 28-70/2.8 is significantly cheaper than the original Canon L lens. Are these the best lenses ? No. Are they better than cheapo consumer lenses ? Definitely.
Ditto for flashes. 2nd hand stuff are great ! When possible, I buy my lenses second hand.
