I owned all three lens before..

I realised that I can get a nice bokeh with the Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f2.8 and not so much with the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM and AT-X 12-24mm f4 Pro DX.

Love the Tokna AT-X 11-16mm f2.8 .. it's a keeper :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

That’s simply because of the f2.8.

hi all... i'm a canon 10-22mm lens user...same for my sis too...
ok... i got mine new n my sis got her lens as a 2nd hand piece...she realised tat there is this black hairline in e lens... i saw it too n i inspect mine ...realised tat i have a bit of the black thing too...
brought down to canon and was told tat the black thing is "carbon fibre". it was being sucked to he lens due o zooming in n out....

so my question is...do your face the same issue too?...
mine still under warranty but they told me tat i have to pay $100 plus if i want to clean it off..but i got to admit that it didn't affect my pics which cfm by canon too...

I noticed that too, thats why get a filter on this lens to over the gaps introduces by the front element zooming. Other than that it’s a fine lens, just enjoying using it to shoot :)

hi...icic..so...u too faced the issue...quite saddist rite...hai...warranty yet they dun provide cleaning... expectin me to fork in $130..... sort of murdering me..

so...any1 else faced it too?...
actually my main concern is... it this a common issue?... will it affect my resale value as in...if ppl ask me.."y is there a thingy inside?"..how m i gonna tell them?...
As i prefer honest deal... n if this is common issue..i can jus bravely tell them that the black thing is carbon fibre which is a common thing to this canon 10-22...

kindly input..
thanks in advance!

This is not an L lens. There is no weather seal, thus this thing is bound to happen even on prime lens.

If cannot fetch high, just think of more creative ways to use this lens lor...;p

encounter a seller too
His copy got foreign particle as i inspect it using a light shining into the lens and looking through it.
Do rem to inspect the lens carefully.
He brought it down to CSC but they say it wont affect the quality
however, its like a torn in the flesh, even if i bought it, it will keep pricking me
So do becareful when getting 2nd hand item from buy/sell section.

In the end, buying new lens might not be a bad idea after all as u can have a piece of mind.

IMHO, dust in lens is quite common... even new or those call weather sealed lens might have some dust in it, so don't need to worry too much about it as long as the dust doesn't affect the image quality.

Have a nice day.

All EF-S zoom lens I reckon. Even my 17-55mm used to have dust inside. :(

hi...er... i do know that dust is unavoidable...but what's inside the lens is carbon fibre...not dust..haha...
hence...what my question basically is..."is it common for canon 10-22mm lens to have carbon fibre on the lens element due to zooming?"
cheers!:)

Err... how you know that is carbon fibre?? You take out the dust and send for lab test??

Dust can get in your lens in various way... zooming for some lens, sometime during assembly in factory or during repair in service centre, but I think most dust usually get in during changing of lens.

Anyway, dust is everywhere and soon will find it way into your lens in some point of time (may be not if you only shoot in clean room), so enjoy shooting and don't worry too much.

Have a nice day.

er....the technician told me tat it is carbon fiber...
also...it is in black color..
put it simply...i know how to different shape whether is it dust or not...
which mean..i can cfm tat the "thing" is not dust....but as per wat technician told me...it is carbon fiber...
anyway...i'm not worry at all...jus wanna know whether is it common to haf the "thingy = carbon fiber" for this specific model coz i dun seem to c this sort of "thing" in my other lenses...

cheers!

Got the canon 10-22mm lens... darn... loving it to death le.

Morning, on the way to work. Legs were heavy, last night slept pretty late due to exam revision. Met the usual cat at the playground in the morning. 9.04am... OH NO! LATE FOR WORK!!! *Start running*

If it's IQ alone, then I think the 11-16 f2.8 is the sharpest among the three. It's known to be even sharper than the 17-55 f2.8 even. Constant f2.8 too, great for indoor events group photos and stuff. It uses micro motor, so I guess you shouldn't expect the AF to be blazing fast, but i heard it's decent.
I think you should narrow down your choice to 10-22 and 11-16. It's your final decision whether to choose better IQ and fast aperture, or for USM and extended range.
But don't fret it too much, both are great lenses and you can't really go wrong either way I think

Direct comparison of the various wide angle lenses here

I simply love the bokeh of the tokina f2.8 which the canon fail to produce, maybe the canon f4 is good in other aspects. But for me, the tokina was what I was looking for in a wide angle.

Below is a sample picture of Arab Street taken with the Tokina at f2.8
