gd and affordable L lens for landscapes and portraits.. f/4 is not enough for low light conditions, daylight conditions no problem. =)
For general indoor shoots, f/4 is enough even at ISO 400.

Still life, yes. Events of any sort, no way.
Possible. Been there and done that.
Very well, but my guess is either your flash was blasting all the way, lighting there was really very bright, or there wasn't much ambient light in the background.
There's nothing wrong with a lot of people posting up this lens for sale. Photographers sell lenses for many reasons. Upgrade, don't use them often, need money for something else, etc.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this lens. Since its debut, it has won many awards in terms of picture quality it can produce, affordability and light weight.
I have used this lens for many years now, either for weddings, events and landscape. It's very short focusing distance and fast focusing makes it a top choice for a 1.6crop body (for my 10D). However, I just upgraded to the 5D and it is a bit too wide for this. I tend to use it less now, but I'm keeping it for sure as it is still a top choice for landscape shots. You can see more of my pictures taken using this lens here.
You're using 40D and I would think this it will be a very wise decision to get it. However, you have to know what kind of photos you're taking, the budget you currently have, etc. No point buying this lens if you are into sports photography for example.
As to whether it is a fast lens or not, it depends. For the 10D, it is fast enough if you use it with a flash. For your 40D, I can safely say it will work very well even under low lighting, as you can push up your ISO without any degradation in the picture quality.
Remember, a lens will give the photographer top performance if he knows how and when to use it, extending its strong points and discard its weak point.
Happy buying!!!![]()
Thanks to everyone here for your generous advice. I intended to use it for social gathering events, landscape, travel and street photography. Just bought it from Oracle an hour ago and I had already fallen in love with it!
Haha i was just like u over a year ago when i got mine.

haha...I think I am going to have the same setup as u. now aiming for the 70-200F4L IS...;p
Hi, did you use any filters for your Punggol shot using the 17-40L?
haha...I think I am going to have the same setup as u. now aiming for the 70-200F4L IS...;p
Congrats! Hope to see your photos taken using your new lens.
However, one word of caution my bro. Don't just buy because people are having it. Buy when you really need it, and will continue to use it. If you buy and never use, it's as good as money down the drain. Give it to me.![]()
i would choose without IS version ;p
Yes, i considered long and hard these few months on my usage and the setup I wanted. read up a lot on CS and other photo forums. In the meantime, I went on a few outings with fellow CSers. Learning and listening to them, wat works and wat didn't. Along the way, discovered what I like to shoot and finalise the lenses I wanted to get.![]()
any particular reasons?
May I ask what kind of photography or what kind of photos are you taking currently, and are you taking these photos during your leisure, or are you considering going fully into photography?
