Was the banding seen in all of your high-ISO images?

At the same time, the banding may not be attributed to just one issue, but may have been several problems stacking up.

The severity of yours and Blu's compared to most others' E-330s leads me to believe in a bad batch of cameras rather than an algorithm problem.

RAW data includes Bayer interpolation, but not sharpening.

Hmmm, anyone out there with an Sigma SD14 would be so kind and test out the Foveon for us?? :think:

But when I get my hands on a E-510 demo unit, I am going to shoot 100 underexposed shots at ISO1600 pushed 2 EV steps. If it passes that, I can wave goodbye to another months' savings.

if you are using 410 or in future the 510, you can try setting the noise control to zero. the details in the iso 1600 shots are remarkable (as seen in the samples in some of the webbies). worst to worst case scenario is that you might have to use neat image or noise ninja for the clean up.

Last I bothered to count, with my 'mild' banding E-330, it's roughly 1 in 20 ISO1600 images that will get it bad (immediately noticeable). It's there in most ISO1600 shots but takes a moment of scrutiny. It's very rare at ISO800, 1000 now and I try my best to use those ISO levels instead of ISO1600.

I've seen those samples on DPReview forum before... even if you leave the noise on, it has that nice film-like graininess to them that may suit a particular mood.

I hope Oly can work with those 3rd-party noise-removal software producers by helping them to customise noise-profile plugin files for their software to use on Oly cams.

Want to get a 50-200 when everyone upgrade to SWD Version.

Er, you're assuming a lot of us will go for the SWD version and there'll be a bumper crop of used old version 50-200's on the market?

I'm betting most likely most of us will get the 12-60 instead (significant view angle improvement) instead of a faster focussing, slightly lighter 50-200.

Well, the rich guys will just upgrade everything...

I'm keeping my "slow mo" 50-200mm. Don't see the point of losing several hundred bucks just to trade up to SWD.

I am a compact camera user and am looking to upgrade to a dslr for more customization and room to learn/improve. I was originally considering to purchase the nikon d40 (over the oly e500 since it was such an old model) but seeing the perfornance of the new e410 - it is indeed tempting, altho it is at least 300$ more!

As I intend to purchase my new dslr system (in preparation for a trip later part of the year), wondering if anyone has any comments to the oly e510 - if the IS is really an impt aspect to have? I think it is (since I can be quite a "shaker").. but is it worth the wait and price when it is finally launched? I do have a max budget of 1000-1200...

To the happy people who have already bought the e410, would you reckon that a IS would do good for the higher price?

Since you have time on your side, this is what you should do:

Hang on for a couple of weeks or so, and wait for the release of the E510. Then compare the 410 and 510 side-by-side, try them out and see which feels best in your hands.

Personally I'm not a fan of IS (and it doesn't really help me) so I shall not comment about it.

The 410 and 510 uses the same sensor and image processing engine, so the many samples you see for the 410 now also apply to the 510.

You may want to take note that the 510 with the kit lens is expected to retail around SGD1,500 or so, versus the retail price of the 410 at SGD1,200.

was tempted to get the e410 so i went to MSC this evening and was quoted $1150.
played with it for abt 10m and liked it despite its plasticky feel and shutter sound.

wanted to get it becos of the small, compact size but decided to wait for the e510.
my only reason to get the eXXX is more of a techonology upgrade to the e1.

Get an used 50-200 when some people upgrade to SWD version.Currently use old 40-150.I used 40-150 more then 14-45.

Hello and welcome to Four Thirds.

For your case, I would suggest :

11-22mm for architectural and landscapes.
50-200mm for general sports and wildlife. *With an additional 2 x teleconverter for reaching the wildlife.
FL50 or Metz 44 flash
RM-1 (if you really need it)
And a decent Manfrotto or Benpro tripod. Good to invest in a Gitzo too if you have the money. And a good ball head for the heavier lens.

Thank you for your comments. =) On hindsight, I guess I was really asking the obvious. =P E410 may also drop in price (i'm guessing and crossing my fingers) when E510 is launched.

Altho, I am curious to know what kind of IS technique/equipment do you use then, especially for lowlight photography.

I can do a 1/20 or 1/30 at 200mm, or a 1/10 at 50mm, and slower with wider focal lengths.

If I can't do it handheld, I use a tripod (I have one that weighs a bit more than a kilo, so it's pretty easy to lug around).

IS is not going to help for a 2 sec exposure!

Heard its under $1.2k with 14-42 kit lens and a 2Gb CF (not sure what brand/model). CA and vignetting seem to be much improved compared to the 14-45.

The camera mounts ON the 14-50 from the L1 :bsmilie: Theres a small stack of stickies below the body without which the body just rock around the lens. The 14-50 is also larger in volume than the E-410.

I'm a newcomer to the 4/3 world (been using Nikon & Fuji DSLRs) and exploring the mix and match possibility. I have read that the Leica's 14-50 can be mounted on the Oly but can all the Oly lenses be mounted on the Panasonic L1, particularly the 50-200mm? How much is this 50-200mm by the way?

Reason for my asking is that my L1 is on the way and am preparing for it.
